Creating Community Website for Profit?

Hi,

I've been thinking of ways to make a website and make money by advertising. A few of my friends have made websites for local businesses and this gave me an idea. My small town doesn't have a website at all. I figured I could have a list of local business(with information about them, contact info, short description, making even ratings) and local events around town on the site. I thought I could make money by having the businesses that wanted to advertice pay me a small monthly fee. Something small like $10/month.

Has anyone done this or heard of someone who has? I'd appreciate any ideas, advice, and criticisms of my idea!

I am developing a website for my small town, it will be a website for both people living here and tourists.

We will have local people write articles, and also have some pro journalist write some.

We will have like a companylisting, restaurant guide, event guide, classifieds.

The idea is of course to make money of it, but also to support our community so we are thinking like you and taking a small fee fo listings and such.

I think it can work, but you need to involve the locals in it, to get the right feel =)

Good Luck!

//Andreas

Andreas: Have you published your site yet? What type of features are you including? Let me know how things go with it!

Bobby4: I have VERY little internet biz knowledge but to answer your question, I would say for the same reason people started advertizing on tv instead of print....
