When you have a product that will be sold in several region-wide grocery stores and want to offer a promotional coupon, how would you go about doing this?

How do you make a coupon that will scan for your specific product at [any] cash-register and discount the customer?

I've been trying to research this and can't find anything.

Hi Scott,

The difficulty with what you are suggesting is data. Barcodes are simply a string of digits, changed by way of a font into a series of lines, readable by a barcode scanner. Different businesses will have different systems for acknowledging this digits, and as such there isn't really one standardised system used by everyone. In a nutshell, if you took a tin of baked beans purchased from one store and got it scanned in a different store, it would not neccessarily be recognised.

You may need to approach the stores in question, and ask their IT depts to assist you. Alternatively, make the offer as an aftersale, whereby they can take their docket as proof of purchase and perhaps link it to the barcode on your product, then recieve the discount this way.

Another idea would be to negotiate on the buy price with the grocery store, so that they will put a prominent 30% off display in return for a higher margin. Hope this helps somewhat
