Do you plan to resell brick-and-mortar or online?

brick-and-mortar is nice because you can charge full retail for all the brand new stuff, which, given the relatively slim margins on new game stuff (hardware and software) you need to be able to get the most for it that you can. In a brick-and-mortar games business, the new stuff is really to get people in the door so they can trade in their used stuff, and then you make a ton of money off THAT. The trick is to offer like 10% over EBGames trade-in values, which is still peanuts. What's more, take EVERYTHING on trade in, even super old stuff, a lot of it will fetch high prices in the rare games market online and this is something the big retailers lose out on by only accepting more recent trade-ins.

For online, volume is the key, because margins will be SLIM. You have to ship, and you can't stick the buyer for shipping, so your price has to be "retail - shipping" at the VERY HIGHEST, but probably even lower than that because online shoppers expect lower prices. You can't really accept trade-ins online because of all the shipping charges inherent in it, so you just need to push new stuff out the door in as great a quantity as possible.


I dealt in selling rare game items to collectors for awhile, everything from the mildly uncommon (Sega CDX's, obscure Japanese consoles, etc) to the really and truly rare (development gear, IP rights to games, unreleased software, etc...).

For the truly hardcore, nothing is as valuable as actually owning the IP rights to their favorite classic game, and in some cases, this is possible....and you would not BELIEVE what many are willing to pay.

At any rate, I got out of the games business, not profitable enough for the work involved, IMO. I might get back in if I can ever find a good niche.
