.COM vs .NET addresses

I don't know if this question has been asked before, so I apologize if this is a repeat.

Is it worth paying a domain broker or owner for the .com address when the desired .net address may be available?

In other words, is there an air of legitimacy or association that comes with having a .com address over some of the alternative extensions?! And is there the potential to lose page visits by having a .NET address while people are surfing the .COM address?!

Whats your thoughts? Is it worth it to go .com or is .net just as sufficient?

in my opinon i think it's really up to what demographic you're trying to reach (age, pc smarts) if it's a tech website i don't see why .net wouldn't work

let's say you're a social network aiming for 18-24, i believe you would want to have a .com bc most people affiliate websites with .com

Target market: 21-35. First movers of technology (i.e. the group that ran out to by the FIRST generation iPod, Moto RAZR and LCD tv, even if it is only 24").

I'm thining the same thing - that depending on the site, .NET addresses are suitable. However attempting to go mass market and appeal to certain "whimsical" target markets such as the 18-24 and 21-35 market ranges, .com is better.

It's just more expensive.

:sigh:

.com for company and .net for networking. Usually they use .net for IT related stuff and .com is for businesses.

So if you want to run a business with IT related stuff, you can use .net otherwise stick with .com.

The problem I always had with buying the .net is that the .com owner would always skim traffic off of my site without doing anything, and to that end I usually atleast make an effort to but the .com.

My 2 cents

is it me or does the .com seem more respectable, everyone pretty much uses .com and if people forget your website address they will most likely put .com after it

It's the order of use I think about. I try .COM and then I try .NET and then I hit up Google.

I dont' want to lose potential customers that way - being that most of our traffic will come from word of mouth and not formal advertising where people will be directed straight to the domain itself.

.com is the first place people look... so that's the first place you should be.

Not sure if you've checked out a blog post I did or not (I've been giving it out like free candy recently): http://www.nathanwaters.com/archives...ct-domain-name

... that's basically how I've found my domain names. The most I've ever paid for a name is $30 through www.tdnam.com ... although I'll be buying one soon for $100.
