    college resource site? opinions

just want to see everyones opinions about creating a college resource website. just a site where students can talk about topics posted and also a source for helping them out with their college needs

what do you think about creating a site about students and for students to help them succeed in school?

this will also target parents that would like to help out their sons and daughters.

I think it sounds like a start to a great idea.
You really need to elaborate and figure out details of how the site will work.
I am open to talk to you about it if you'd like to throw around ideas, PM me for my contact info.

name 5 great exits on "college related" plays in the last 3 years...if you can do that, you possibly have an opportunity

if you can't, you probably don't know what sells or what's going on in the market, in which case, consumer internet products for tweens is not your ideal opportunity, because you know less about it than your competition

p.s. don't worry about this "target parents that would like to help out their sons and daughters"....that's just irrelevant

the way you're asking the question, the answer is mostly negative

the problem that you're hoping to solve has to be a lot more specific

which college students are you hoping to sell to? what subject do you wanna help them with? what's their problem? how do you wanna help them? why do they need your help? what if they don't do anything? why aren't they getting help anywhere else? how is your solution competitive? how are your distribution costs lower? how are your margins higher?

what you're saying sounds like you hoping to put together an online forum, which is neither a good idea, or a competitive solution

well not a forum, more like a site for resources of resume, jobs, etc, its going to be all affiliates tho

the website itself will have a blog touch to it where comments can be discussions to the topic and the content can relate to a college student such as maybe a top 10 tips for move in etc

    thanks for your comments

    ian..we've had this conversation before

as you know, nothing is a good idea unless it's a competitive solution, to a quantifiable, difficult, homogeneous problem

at this stage, you're not problem formulating, which is the reason for the links in my sig

    try to formulate the problem

A website of resouces with affiliates will not do well. No one will go to the website, the people that do will not return again. The blog/forum will not attract/retain people. As Daniel has said, you need a much more narrow scope. Focus on a specific problem or set of problems college students have. For instace, my first successful company focused on college students finding out which bars had the best drink specials on which nights.
The problem: college students don't have a lot of money, but want to drink and have a good time. There was no good resource that listed the 40+ bars in the area with their daily specials.
The solution: A website with information on local bars, their daily specials, that can be searched by day of the week.

It's ok to have a website that addresses a lot of issues and has a lot of resources, but there should be some core service or services that you are providing that makes it competitive.

ok I know I have to find a problem and I need to create a solution to it, so lets says this

    problem: freshmen "15"
    solution: how to avoid?

something on that issue? problem dictate a wieght gain once you are in college, solution how to avoid or become fit?
along those lines, so just referring to sites do not work to often?

the only reason I came up with this is because there is a website called ewenrecommends.com

    and its all resources
