    college education

Hi all...ive been watching this forum for a few weeks now and i finally decided to come out of my shell. i have a small question for those of you who went college. I'm 17 and I am forced to go college even though, without a doubt, I'm not going to complete the course anyway because of work, lack of time and business opportunities. what is the best business related college course to take that would benefit me in some way if i'm only going to stay for two months or so? thanks!

    edit:
Also, is there ever any women on any of the business courses? I find I hard to believe that there would be.

You'd be wrong to think a business course is a 'men only' venue. It sounds like a design course would suit you better, they usually have plenty of creative woman. You won't learn too much from 2 months of a business course.

You ask a very broad question and do not give us any information about what "business opportunities" you are engaging in.

The courses that will probably best help you in running any kind of business are finance, accounting, marketing and strategy. But for two months why waste your time?

Maybe it is different for college in the states than university in Canada, a semester is 4 months. So your saying you want to pay like $3000 to attend 1/2 a semester of basic courses. Find a better educational investment (maybe some good books on bookkeeping, marketing, excel, and the likes).

Im so confused.. first off, yes there are women in businesses classes.. How are you forced to go to college? if your business opportunities are such wouldn't you be able to skip college and support yourself. If not I assume your parents have some financial leverage, in which case you really cant afford not to go to college unless you plan to accept lower wages for the rest of your life..

Why would anybody ever be forced into college. If you don;t want to go and your not going to use it to help in your future then why bother.

You're 17 darling...if it's your parents who are "forcing" you to go to college, then understand that they are smarter than you. You have work? Plenty of people work and go to college.

I work 40 hours a week, take 12-15 credit hours a semester all year round. there are people in my classes who work 60 hour weeks and they go to school. school is an investment....how can you ask for a "quick course" on business if you're not even willing to invest in yourself?

If your business flops and your 4 years older without no college education, lets see how far you will go.

Not every "entrepreneur" succeeds, so have some backup plans ready.

For the easiest long term plan, you should get as much education as possible now because it will only be harder to do it when you get older.

If you can't be disciplined enough to take one or two years of school, how will you manage to run a business for 10 or 20 years which will require twice the amount of work and headaches than school does. School is an invaluable tool, take advantage of it.

Everyone is right. School is invaluable. It doesn't seem like it when you're 17, but if you don't take advantage, I guarantee you'll regret it. A great course to take would be on business plans. You have to make a business plan no matter how you decide you are going to create an income. It's like a road map. You'll get lost without it.

I understand what you all are saying but my business partner, who is currently working and making a decent living, has a lot of money to invest and would lend me money if I were to ever need it. I want to give my absolute dedication to our business - i know our market very well - so he can retire wealthy. the problem is my parents refuse to let me live with them unless I go into full time education and I dont want to be borrow any money from my partner, at least not yet.

i'm sure even if we dont succeed in the first year or two he would be able to provide me with a job in the part of the company he manages

thanks for all of your replies so far !!

    edit:
    - to scottrobertson regarding books; i already have a whole collection on online business, accounting and the like!

No offense, but I can't decide if you have a very real opportunity that is not understood by your parents or if you are an average 17 year old who believes that you know everything and yet is astonishingly ignorant.

    I'll answer to both.

If this is real, then you have little to fear from asking your partner to assist you in getting started. Do some research to ascertain the risks involved. By the sound of your responses above, you may have already done this. You write like an intelligent person, so understanding your risk should be a no brainer for you. If you fear asking for what would be a potential bad investment at this time (due to disorganization, not concept) then you should go to school and take courses that will help further your concept past this stage. Take advantage of your parents paying your way, believe me, it will be an asset to have the education without the debt. Certainly one can experience success without school, and school is no guarantor of success, but evaluate this situation beyond the next 6 months, 1 year, 5 years. What classes can assist you with this concept in the long run, even if it will not necessarily help you in the short run. Since they are paying for your classes and letting you live at home, I'm assuming rent free, take advantage of not having to work at a part time job and instead work your business. It may not be the way your want (get used to that) or on the time table you would like (get used to that too) but you'll have the benefit of an umbrella over you that many of us do not have. I have been building a website for a couple of years now, and it is far from being done or making money because of my knowledge (or lack there of) of programming and my work. I consider myself blessed to have had this idea of mine, the business side of it will come when it is time.

If you are an average 17 year old, go to school and get yourself a little more centered. Once, there was a man who was in advertising. He was bought out by his partners and approached some New York investors about a business. They says to him, "Go start the business and when we see it in action, we'll back you." So he takes his money and starts the business. Nearly out of operating capitol, he finally gets a meeting with his investors, who tell him to take a short walk off a short pier. I lost my job because of their decision not to back him. There is a lot I don't know about the specifics of this situation, and I will never know about it. But this is what can happen when you just jump in. Intentions are not everything, results are.

    Welcome to the world business.
