    Coffee Business

I am a 24 year old entrepreneur located in Toronto, Canada. My business partner and I are getting into the coffee business, specifically coffee bean supply. We will be supplying coffee beans to distributors, companies, and restaurants both big and small. Initally we are looking to supply to Canada and the U.S. and than as we grow branch out into Europe and where ever else the demand may grow.

This is where we are at, at this point in time. The coffee beans will be coming from West Africa. My business partner is originally from Africa and a country in which coffee beans are plentiful and a large percentage is of good quality. This was an idea that we have been working on for a while, and are now moving into the next phase of the business plan. As of now we have selected and secured the fields we will be getting the beans from and the farmers which we will be working with. Most of the farmers are people that my business partner knows either personally or though friends and family.

Right now we are in the stage of getting all of the coffee beans tested to ensure that their quality will hold up to the international standards. Since we will be working with a few varieties we would like to get them all tested first in order to see how they rank amongst themselves.

Once this testing phase is finished we will be moving into the next phase of the plan. This is the point in which we are looking to being to network and connect with outside sources.

Here is a brief outline of what we are looking to do:

What we are looking for are people who can help us with getting the contact information for potential buyers (such as wholesalers, distributors, etc.). In the initial contact with buyers we will be looking to find out if they are in need of suppliers and what there needs are in terms of quantity, bean variety, etc.

For those who show interest we will send out an informational report which will hold all the information with regards to the coffee bean, telling them everything from the type of land the coffee is grown on, to the way the beans are harvested.

For those who show further interest after this point we will ship out samples allowing them to test the beans themselves and verify whatever other information they require with regards quality and taste.

We are hoping that for those who are interested they will initially place a small/conservative order which would lead in larger orders in the future along with referrals to other companies. I mean if a company places a larger order initially that is great as well, but we are assuming that we will be starting with small orders, build up a relationship with the company and then move to larger orders

I guess I also should have mentioned at the beginning that this is Fair Trade Coffee. Fair trade in the sense that farmers get a fair price for their harvests in order to achieve a decent living wage, which farmers are paid the international commodity price for coffee and become members International Fair Trade Coffee Registrar.

Anyone who is interested or can offer any ideas, suggestions or constructive criticism please feel free to do so, or PM me if you would like to talk more.

Now I know from reading these boards in the past that there are always people that are going to leave rude comments. For those I would just ask that if you have issue with something, if you can find some constructive way to say this or offer ideas for improvement that would be much more appreciated.

    Take Care

    Sean

My advice would be to buy a bulk load of the beans yourself and then go out and sell them. If you are going to run the business you first need to the one on the street. You'll learn a great deal about your product and your potential customer. This is not something you want to trust others to do with out first doing it yourself.

You'll also have a much easier time getting others to take a chance on selling your product once you have proved that you can get the beans into Canada and that you can sell them.

There is still big money in the coffee business good luck!

I enjoyed reading your post, Sean, and I offer you the best of luck with your business.

Glad to see some fellow Torontonians here (well, Mississauga, but I like to consider myself part of the family). Maybe I'll be drinking your coffee at a local Timothy's in the near future

nice post!!!!! I am originally from west africa. My country is the 3rd largest producer of coffee. I tried to do this business but it failed because of connection. I strongly advise you to check the water before diving. buy some lead from company and talk to purchase department and be 100% sure before investin a dime. I tried i know what i am talking about. there is a lot of money but the key is connection and referrals. Good Luck
