Buying more than 1 domain for a website ...

I'm creating a website and was wondering if I should purchase all of the .com, .org, .biz, .info, .net of my domain name because I've come across same name domains with different extension for different businesses. Do you think I should do this?

If you're using it for business, and you plan on building up a brand then to keep on the cautious side it would be smart. There have been many instances where people try and copy a popular site for whatever reason. That being said don't go crazy and buy every possible domain name that is similar to yours.

I would purchase the main ones ".com" ".org" ".net"
I have 2 domain names, both are ".com" though but hopefully no one will steal it

yes, just purchase the main ones .com, .net, .org.. I was looking through some domain names that are at a huge bargain considering their marketing potential, so you might be interested in these (they're all for sale on Sedo.com)

This is actually and good idea. I worked for a company that sold light bulbs online. Their biggest competitor was someone that had a slightly different site layout and look, and was only 1 letter difference between the their domain name. So I would also suggest taking time and grabbing as many domains as you can.

Definatley .com, .net and .org as these are the main and most commonly preferred. I don't really use any other type of domain

In most cases I would hold off a .org as these are used for organisations like red cross or madd. When you see a company with a .org and I normally automatically think about this. If i was you i would start by buying up the .com and .nets and if your domain is a multi-word domain try and get the hyphenated versions of them as well first then go back and grab up the .org(s) later. Now a new domain extension that has started to grow ,in popularity, is the .fm(S). Site like ping.fm are starting to become more and more popular with all the social networking crowds.

If you don't mind spend a few extra bucks and planning to build a long term brand I'd say that's a good idea

I suggest to just focus your attention to one domain. Use keyword rich domain name.

Are you trying to build traffic using multiple domains?
Or do you have a brand name and want to protect it?

I don't know of many or any successful sites that use anything but .com

Thanks for all of the advice. I think I will go with the .com, .net, and .info but use the .com for the site and marketing and advertising purposes.

To 'MissedOps' - I want to build a brand and want to protect it, now and for the future as I am expecting it to be a success.
