Business Plans. Anyone heard of one?

I keep seeing everyone on this site talk about how to want to start this. How they started that. Begging for money, etc.

One of the crucial parts of starting a business is having a business plan. A road map so to speak. I have been here a couple weeks and have yet to see one single person mention one at all. If you have no plan, how do you expect to know what you're going to do next?

You kids need to learn about business plans.

BOG we all know about business plans so why do we need to mention them all the time? Also, i have seen them mentioned in the last couple of weeks.

A business plan is the blueprints of a business, and it shows the businesses intentions over a period of time including cash flow forecasts, balance sheets which can be shown to potential investors/banks and to be used by the person who owns the business incase they loose track of what the original intentions where for the business

So explain to me why we need to learn about business plans, when we already know about them?

Those who fail to plan, plan to fail, or something..

Anyway, most people think that if they have a good idea, that's all they need, and they don't need to do any sort of forward thinking or research at all. Maybe so, but if you want your idea to be seriously acknowledged by potential investors or possibly even apply for a government funded loan/grant you'll need to back up your initial idea with some solid research on your market and a detailed breakdown of your plan of action.

I've recently had to put together a business plan, and I was totally lost as to what to include in it at first. I finally decided that it should focus on 4 main areas; the target market(with research, marketing plans), the money(initial funding, marketing budget, cashflow forecasts etc.), the people(staff roles, any outside contractors etc.) and finally the project itself(from ideas through to final development/maintenance).

It takes some time to do the research/analysis side of things, but once that's out the way I found it helped me to spot and iron out some small problems I hadn't even noticed before.
