I'm glad to have found this forum. People have suggested I launch my own design site for artists/musicians for a while now, and I've finally decided to act on it. Luckily, I have a built-in market -- I'm a professional musician, and having helped colleagues and friends with their sites over the years, I'm always getting referrals.
The problem is, I need a business plan. And I can't do it alone (well, I could, but at the sacrifice of sleep and sanity!). I've actually passed up a lot of freelance work because of sleep/sanity issues...which could be lessened if I had a designer/developer to work with.
I know I have A LOT of planning to do - but it seems like the first steps would be:
1. Settle on a content management system (CMS).
This has been one of the biggest hurdles. Over the years I've tested so many 'back-end' programs for sites, and they never seem to be able to do *everything* I need. The closest I've come is Silverstripe (open source, very flexible). But even that has its limitations and quirks.
One option is to get somebody to build a custom CMS - which takes $$$. But it would be brandable and scalable to what we need, although with so many free robust CMSs out there, it seems a little like reinventing the wheel.
So...my options: a)bite the bullet, invest $$-$$$ and make a CMS or b) use something like Silverstripe, crediting as needed (maybe becoming an affiliate) and save some cash.
2. Get some designers who would be happy with a steady flow of work coming in.
I do a decent job putting sites together, but I freely admit I'm not as good as most of the people out there who do it 24/7. I've always been in control of my own work, though, so I'm not too familiar with outsourcing...Would 3-4 designers be willing to share the workload? And how does crediting work - would they be ok with the site saying "designed by company name" instead of their name?
3. Pricing.
This is tricky, as I've always been generous designing for friends/colleagues. I even made a site with a flash intro for $200 - but that was years ago. Most design firms can charge from $800-1500 for a full musician's site, though. How do most companies split profits with the people they outsource to? The advantage of doing it all on my own is that I only had to pay myself...but working with a team, they'd need to be paid for their time. What's a good way to do this and still make a reasonable sum?
I realize this is a lot, especially for my first post. Now I'm wishing I'd minored in business in school...would have come in handy! Any thoughts/advice/opinions are greatly appreciated. Thanks!!![]()
