    Business Majors

Hello, my name is Stephanie, I am a Business Major. This post is mainly for graduates, but fellow students do add input. Graduates, do you feel like having a major in business gives you a big edge over competition? What have you done with your degree? Does it make it easier to find funding? Also, compare concentrations? (Administration, Marketing, management.. ETC)
Students, what do you think the most valuable thing you have learned so far is? What made you decide to major in business and what is your concentration? Also, I have heard that is not necessary to have a degree in business, but I am not sure. Do you agree with this? Why or why not?
Thanks, I am really anxious to hear your opinions.

I feel that having a major in finance helps alot more(at least for me). I feel as though learning how money works and flows gives a more competitive edge. I think that alot of business management is better learned in the real world rather than in a classroom. Everyones business management style is not the same so therefore it's impossible to learn it in a classroom

I think school in general is a joke. To be quite honest. i think that fact that you have to pay to learn things that are actually hinder your chances fro success is quite comical. My advice................ Do what you love and enjoy, the money will follow.

But if you have t take classes to achieve this goal, then so be it. But it highly doubtful!

I would agree with this twenty years ago but in today's business world you NEED a degree. Not necessarily to be successful at that job but to get that job. As for doing what you love and the money will follow, as nice as it sounds it is not always true.

First off, what would you define as competition? You mean within your graduate field, or in the general business field. To all extent, it gives you an edge in the general business field over your competition, but it terms of people who went to Grad school with two different concentrations, then you are in for some competition. Again it all depends which field of business for example I studied Finance and Acct with minor in business, that gave me an more than an edge with someone with a Grad degree in just business. I can get job in both FNAN and ACCT field because they are somewhat correlated be it Acct firms, Investment banks or whatever related to finance and Accounting, better yet with the recessive economy, I still can work in any general business field. Yes it is important to have that MBA degree because it still counts regardless of your concentration.

-The real world doesn't think college is a joke, so I will get a degree.
That wasn't what I was asking..
Thank-you for those who did answer.
I just wanted to know if having a degree helped you financially, and if it gave you a major edge over people without a degree. I am certain that I will be successful in business, the degree is to help me hone my skills and really just another thing to add to my resume.

Well a Grad degree helps financially and like you said its one thing good thing added on the resume. Yes it sure gives you an edge over those who don't have one, and if you concentrate on Finance, Accounting or Information System, then you would gain financially much more than you expected compared to those with a Grad business degree.

In addition, as time goes on and you get certain proffessional certifications like CPA, trust me the sky is your limit, I mean financially.

Judging from your grammar, looks like you should have spent some more time in school. In today's world, anyone looking for a decent job will need a degree, with the exception of VERY few.

Edit: After reading your post again, I have to agree with do what you love and enjoy. Jonathan is right that if you do what you love and enjoy, the money will follow.
