    Business License

Hey all! I am trying to wrap up the details to starting my clothing company and I am stuck on something. I know I need a business license I just don't know what kind or how to obtain one. I have searched the internet many times but still don't find anything sufficient enough for me to make a move on. Any ideas? Your help is greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Jake

If you are in the USA then each state has a business license department. You can usually find it by searching "Name of state" business license. You can also check for "Name of city" business license. They will be able to give you information about businesses licenses.

Each state is different and cities also have varied business license requirements. Do give you an example, I've been in one state where the state didn't require that I have a license if I'm selling a non-tangible service (website design). Now I'm living in another state and that's not the rule of the state that I currently live in.

Yeah I have found stuff like that for The State of Texas but where I am confused is what category does having your own clothing company fall under. Maybe I am just thinking too hard about it. Either way I cant figure it out. Thanks.

Depends on what you're doing in your company, I assume you'll be holding inventory and selling products either to retailers or direct to consumers. While I don't know about Texas, here in Florida, you would possibly need to acquire a license from both the city and county level governments if you'll be holding inventory at a physical location within their administration, though this varies from area to area.

I had to visit both the city and county government websites to find this out though, I don't think it said anything about this on the state gov website here, so you may want to check locally. Hope that helps.

It's a general business license. Go to your city or county office building to the license department and apply for a business license. It's a single owner business, then there is nothing to get into. In Virginia it's $50 a year for it. Super simple to apply for. They will step you through it.

    yes, probably general business.

But, not to hijack your thread, you should have gotten all of this information long ago by joining or visiting your local Chamber of Commerce. If licenses, taxes and fees weren't a part of your business plan, rewrite the plan. If there's no plan, write a plan.

If you've done all of these things and all still fails, please PM me and I would be more-than-willing to at least try to help..AND, in any case...GOOD LUCK IN WHATEVER YOU DO!!

I've noticed that you wanted to start a clothing line company, but who will be supplying you shirts? 3rd party company? Or do you have the printing devices for yourself? Are you just selling tees or what? I think the easiest way to do it is just to create a website with paypal buttons added on to the site and then grow from there.

@ACMAir I am located in Texas. I applied for my resale permit with the state and I spoke with the VP of the bank where I opened my business account for the company and he said that was all I would need.

The License and Fee aspect was all included in my plan I just got confused by the information that was coming my way so I thought I'd give this site a try. I am doing my own designs and I have a supplier that i will be purchasing blank ts from and a local screenprint shop I will use. I have already been networking this past 6 months and I have a couple stores that the shirts will be in. I'd also like to start a website and sell online. i just have to print a few shirts to show the name and logo and what not are in use so I can apply for my trademark.
