Bulk buying of used clothing; any recommendations?

Hi all - My associates and I are looking for a reputable source to buy select used clothing in bulk weight from the US (by bulk weight we mean by kilo/pound and container loads which are between 13 - 15 tons per shipment). Does anyone have a recommendation of a company they have used before or a suggested resource? Thanks

Don't see this on here often. I sell this. What port are you working out of and what grade are you looking for? Are you looking to do a 40' container?

So far I've only had time wasters. Are there any serious business people here who can deliver high grade used clothing in bulk or know of a resource who can?

In order to help you, I must know the final destination of the goods. Every country has a different clothing grading. I had 20 years in the rag business and I can help you to avoid the crooks that prey on new customers.

We are looking for an going source, eventually moving to 40 foot containers but want to start with the purchase of one 20 foot container of grade one selected summer used clothing for export to Egypt in 100lb sacks. Ideally in sizes that are Small - Medium - Large as Extra Large/Jumbo type sizes do not work well for this market. If you can supply these items, or know someone who can, at a realistic price per pound let me know. Thanks

    Rags for egipt

    Dear Parvaze:
First grades summer clothing in 100 Lb bales is something very difficult to buy in USA. If you go shopping near the Mexico border, the graders sell it for US $ 2.00 and up the pound. If you are new in the business they will mix their second grades with the good ones as soon you walk out of the warehouse. They are the worst crooks.
Going to the Canada border, or Canada itself the people will get better clothing quality, but they have a lot of winter clothing that they have to get rid of, and will condition the sale to certain amount of heavy clothing.
    Recommendations:
If you buy a 40' container do no pay all up front.
Request to be present at the grading at all times.
Mark every bale that is finish with a non erasable marker
Count the bales before they are loaded into the container.
Make sure that the weight loaded comply with the road rules in USA and Egypt. Fines for everload are high.
Make sure that you have the same seal number written in your invoice and other paperwork.

Try International Export from Toronto, the owner is Mohammed Hamir. The only honest rag grader I found.
Please feel free to ask me before you make a purchase. I know 80% of the graders.

I agree with everything you said here.. There are some unrealistic expectations from this poster. I gave him a quote of $0.60 in 1000lbs bails and he said I was to high. Your quote of $2.00 is actually pretty accurate for the detailed sort he is looking for. I was scared off when he told me he wants to do one a day (you'll need $1,500,000 in order to move a 40' container a day). 98% of the people out there who are trying to do this never pan out. I can tell within 60 seconds of talking to someone if they have a reasonable request that can be met. This buyer wants perfection which does not exist in this industry. It's a headache waiting to happen...

Roger - You aren't being quite honest in your response. You quoted 70 cents a pounds and pretty much hung up on me without even really trying to understand what I was saying. With that said, I also sent you an email and left you voice messages explaining my credentials and what we are doing but you failed to respond so I don't think my credibility is suspect :-)

I'm also not sure why you think $1.5M is a lot of money (which it is by the way for a lot of people here, but not necessarily for everyone :-)) Keep in mind that just one of the companies I co-founded, Kareo, recently attracted a $9.5M investment from OpenView Venture Partners and another was acquired by Sandata (a billion dollar corporation) so $1.5M isn't exactly a huge sum of money.

Healthfinder - There is some very good advice from you here and I appreciate it, I will email you privately.

Roger - You shouldn't be so quick to pull the trigger as some of us here are serious business people with serious connections that you might want to work with :-)

Healthfinder You have some good comments here which I appreciate. I'm not sure what your experience has been but I've found numerous companies in the US that are capable of sorting and selling in 100lb bags rather than 1,000 lb bales. The prices for higher grades seem to between 55 - 85 cents per pound for summer and "light" winter sorted and these companies are across the board from LA to Miami to New York.

In any event, I don't have an email address for you so if you think you may be able to assist please drop me a note: parvaze at departmentb dot com. Thanks

Like I said... I wish you the best of luck and there is plenty of money to made from people with reasonable expectations. Once you've been in this industry for a few years you'll see what I'm saying.

Fair enough Roger, I won't even address your "reasonable expectations" comment as based on what I've found so far I'm confident that I will get the sort I want, packaged the way I want it at the price I need it to be.

I'll post an update if/when I complete the transaction so you can see whether my specs were out of line, and if I was wrong I'll post that too :-)

By the way, I notice you are running a design competition. I'm also in need of someone to do some design work on a new site so if any of the people you turn up are any good I would appreciate your referring them on to me as well.

Maybe try, via trading, never bought anything from them. They seem to have a large supply of clothing on pallets in large gaylord boxes.

You can post your requirements on alibaba.com. Its a pretty good B2B website.

    Update

Just a quick update on this thread. We were ultimately successful in locating a supplier who could grade, sort and pack the clothing according to our requirements and we ended up paying 48 cents a pound.

The first 20 foot shipment has already gone and they are now working on getting the second , a 40 foot container, ready. So all's well that ends well
