Question Building my Own Website Ideas

    Hi,

I'm planning to make a website where I write about new dvd releases, now playing movies, coming soon, trailers, etc.

I'm going to write things like reviews, plots, actors, etc.

Do you think I have a good chance of gaining lots of traffic (people who view my site)?

And if you were me, what kind of website would you build that has a popular topic and would attract a lot of traffic?

    Thanks.
    Jim

For me, I don't read movie reviews. I'm into electronics so that would be a good topic.

    Honestly, No.

The movie review sites are way too saturated to make anything with them now. You would have to have a huge catch on why people would rather go to your site.

I think for your site to be able to compete with the likes of many of the review sites out there you would need an entire team. The updating of such a webstite would be very time consuming. I think youd do better writing some kind of blog to develop the traffic.

Good luck.Movie and dvd reviews are all over the web.You would have to find a special niche or outrageous ads to get traffic.

I befriended a gentlemen here in Los Angeles who has been building and selling websites for over 10 years now, he is also a very smart investor and owns several huge apartment complexes here as well.

Just over 6 months ago he launched a movie review website that hosted trailers for upcoming films, professional and non-professional reviews, as well as a huge database where where you could type in an actors name and it would tell you all the movies they are associated with. Like IMDB.com

Long story short, he just sold the website for a eight figure sum.

So I think your site has potential, you just need to make it different than all the other movie review site. Take a pen and paper and go to every movie review site that you can and write down what they all have in common, etc... then go from their, find the thing that they don't have and include it on your site.

    Good Luck

Thank you for all your responses!

Well, these days, when I want the plot of a movie, its almost impossible to find one thats complete. Take IMDb for example, I went to their site countless times, but no matter what movie I search for, they never seem to provide a good plot. Sure they have a lot of features, but each feature lacks info.

Also, most movie sites I go to is really un-user friendly. They have a LOT of ads, and seems to focus a lot on news of actors, when consumers only want the info about the movie.

I guess it would be a bit hard to update my site though.

hi jim..of course not. you're talking about consumer internet. it's a hits based business. the chances of you "gaining lots of traffic" are less than 1:10,000..
now, in terms of opportunity selection, you can follow the recent investment activity in consumer internet to get an idea for what kinds of startups are hits at the moment; but if i were you i'd drop consumer internet all together and do enterprise customers.

I think there is always an opportunity as long as you do it differently - it has to be innovative and have an "it" factor to drag people to the site. Perhaps something like a wikipedia for different types of movies, where people are free to edit the site, put in their own reviews - something similar to rotten tomatoes perhaps but with a bit more user interactivity? Good luck

My friend built a movie website. Forget what its called but he gets heaps of traffic. He used some sort of software he read about on some website. I'll try to find the web address.

Yes, lots are having these sites so it's tough. That really depends on how you unique your idea is and how you market your site - not the topic (though at first you think it does help big). Good luck!

You might need to update very regularly, people visit movie review because they wanted to know whether the movie is worth watching or not. So if you can do review for new movie before many other does, you probably can have some success.

ANY site can get traffic. It all depends on how many people hear about your site, and what they find when they get there. So it's more a question of can you get the word out to people about your site, and provide them with something that makes them want to keep coming back.

But like was said above, if you're planning a movie review site, you'll have a lot of competition. A better strategy might be to identify a particular GENRE of movie, and build a site around it (ie: independent movie reviews, horror movie reviews, comedy flick reviews, action movie reviews), then market it to people who have an interest in that genre of movie.

Either way though, it would take a lot of updating, so that's something to factor in. Either way, good luck!

Maybe if you make a team (like some have said) discounts on movie tickets and DVD's, movie show times, your personal movie rating system, blogs where other movie watchers can go to and post what they think about the movie, and reviews for independent films that don't have much publicity, maybe can make some buzz on your site.
