    Build your own computer idea

First off, this is one of the best forums I have came across. This site is very informative and I check in everyday.

Second, I have this idea for a website that lets you custom build your own computer. This would incorporate the idea of godaddy.com, which would let you build your own computer piece by piece, since most custom built computers have to be purchased as already built and does not let you actually custom build it yourself. They would have a choice of building on their own, or have me build it for a small fee.

My question is, what kind of problems do you think I would incur with this website? I want to reach everyone, not just computer geeks who know what they want and can build it themselves. I want to be family oriented with lots of family options to choose when building their computer.

    All criticism is welcome.

There's a reason this doesn't exist; because most people don't have the skills and ability to build a computer themselves nor do they want to.
Your model to custom build it yourself and then ship it to customers has been happening by Dell since the late 90's.

    thanks for the reply

The idea is to offer more hardware and software to be included in/on your computer at a fraction of the cost. With that being said, DELL only offers certain hardware and software while I would offer a variety of hardware and software; some at no cost and some at a low cost.

This is an idea that a buddy of mine and I have tossed around a few times in the passed and have never pursued it. There have been a few of these types of businesses that have come and gone over the years. I know a lot of people who have custom built their own computers, including myself. I have looked at these businesses when I've been in the market for one, but they have never been able to offer what I was looking for at a good price.

Its too easy to just buy the parts from whichever company offers the best price and assemble yourself.

People who aren't very familiar with computers wouldn't be buying from you, since they would just go to their local retailer or to dell. Your target market would most likely be people who are very knowledgeable about computers, and most of them are willing to assemble it themself if they save some money.

So unless you can offer your products/services at lower prices than all the competitors, then it just doesn't seem to be a very feasible business idea.

I agree with radreality.. plus these days everyone knows 'someone' who can install something for someone else who hasn't got a clue!

You market would be very small, and short lived I'm afraid.

This is already done isnt? there are a heap of computer stores that have websites and you can by any product you want, and get them to build it if you want, or just order the products and build it yourself
