    Blogging is it effective ?

Can anyone tell me how effective blogging would be to promote my business?
Should it be a professional blog or would a "casual" blog be as effective?

Blogging can be effective to redirect your readers to your site using your contents. This can be more of a discussion of a certain topic like the newest trend in your business, or how these new products are helpful to the consumers. Make sure you concentrate more on your contents and likewise, redirecting them to visit your site to check some of your products/services.

Blogging is good because it allows you to add content to your site easily. The more you update the better. Make sure that you have a social bookmarking button like "add this" on your blog.

Definitely have a professional blog that contains information on your sector.

I think you need to figure out "who" you are writing for when determining this. What is the goal for this blog? Sales? Traffic? Publicity?

You are a designer, so you will probably be writing about current or past projects, showcasing some of your work, etc. I think you can find a balance between professional and casual but definitely keep in mind who you are trying to target.

And make sure before you actually start a blog, that it is something you really want to do and something you are going to keep up with.

    Good luck!

Blogging helps you to reach out to your target market because it offers content that your prospects are interested in reading. Also, because you are going to publish fresh content consistently onto your blog, these content tend to be able to rank for keywords that a 5 page site wouldn't rank for.

Apart from the quantifying factors like traffic, number of leads generated and search engine rankings, a blog allows you to interact and get closer to your customers and prospects. This is done through quality content, comments on your blog posts and updates regarding of your business, products or services that are published via your blog.

Should it be a professional blog or would a "casual" blog be as effective?

This really depends on the style of the blogger and the culture of your business. However, you can incorporate both the professional and fun element into your blog.

Just make a plan prior to starting one. For example, Mondays are for quality blog posts, Wednesdays are blog posts that get people talking about it and Fridays are for some entertaining but industry-related blog posts.

I hope my answers above helped give you an idea of how you can start a blog for your business and how it can help.

Just let me know if you want more information.

Well... blogging can be effective but also very time consuming. As Wayne mentioned, you will need to publish content on a regular basis -- meaning weekly if not daily -- and at one point your content may be outdated.

Why not, instead, promote your business with a regular, content-rich website? You would research profitable keywords that are related to your service oriented business -- topics surfers are looking for -- and on these pages you could promote your services (ex. near the bottom of the pages where visitors are looking for opportunities to take an action).

Understandingly, though, some designers don't like to code, others don't know how to approach this efficiently and appropriately. In that case, I would use a proven system such as SBI.
