Any one that has ever touched marketing (whether internet or regular) they will tell you that word of mouth is key.

When I started my first official website (hobojoegames.com - it was a simple free arcade site), I did the normal SEO, forum posting, a few adwords dollars here and there, but I also bought shirts from cafepress and gave them out to my friends. The shirts had funny sayings on them that attracted attention, and on the back I put "HoboJoeGames.com".

After about 1 month of just marketing to my school, I had on average 500 uniques/day, and 58% of them were from my school's ip address. So out of a population of about 3000, I had 58% of hits. And out of the rest of the world, just 42%...

When people see things physical, they remember it.

So how can you take this visual marketing world wide? Sell some merchandise with your logo, find someone in a different region to wear some shirts, etc.

Now this type of marketing does not work for every site, of course. Can you imagine a major investing firm have tshirts with kids running wearing them for marketing? (no.) So choose the right style to fix your site.

To sum it up, make sure people see it and hear it, not just find it on a search engine.

I would do the same, except add press releases, Word of mouth it up, advertise locally a bit. do some Blogvertising, or go to any kind of Forum and just post a Review site Please, or something.

    Use your imagination.

try to put a break on these original ideas

    original ideas are expensive

you don't have neither the time nor the resources to make mistakes in trying out "new stuff"

at least a million times I've explained over and over again how to launch web services

you haven't done the surveys, therefore you don't have a beta email list, therefore you don't know your prospect expectations, and therefore you don't know how or where to market your product

if you don't know these things, you will fund your self an expensive fishing expedition

I take it you assume your self to be smart, proactive and fiscally responsible, so I don't understand why you refuse to listen

read the case studies for delicious: Joshua did exactly what I'm telling you

    thanks

but the way i look at it is this, its not that i feel i am smart, i feel that i know how to create ideas, my problem is doing it...that is why i toss around so many ideas, im more worried about making sure when its built to spread the word, its getting built because i see all these sites are doin the same thing, and to me its boring as hell..ok let me bookmark a site...great, but it looks like loserviller to me...i wish to do what they do and add something else to it...
    /
they all apread so fast and so easisly why? because people have nothing better to do than sit on their ass all day and put shit together. all those sites will work, just like social networking, people like to be in control and feel like they are doing something.

but thats my two cents, i listen to what you say as well as others, i just feel that if you have a gut feeling about something go after it...isnt that how most businesses start anyway, they just do it? the guy from virgin mobile said screw it, lets do it...so ima say screw everything and just do it...if it works yay if it dont nay, its just money...ill save it again in 2 months no biggie

the reward is much better than the risk, but the original topic was how to market and promote a site like digg, not wether i should do it or not

    thanks guys

A good way to think of marketing ideas, is to imagine yourself as the marketing target. If you see a bumper sticker with a website name, there is a 98% chance you will forget it almost immediately. Therefore, the bumper sticker idea should be thrown out. Use this mind set in deciding what could work or not.
