Best way to drive traffic to my sites?

I have a question... I aimed to get traffic to mine, and it's been working. Pretty well actually. I've managed in a couple months to get myself to an average of about 300 uniques per day. This probably doesn't sound astonishing, but I haven't paid for any of it, and I'm happy about that. April will be my first 10,000+ month for unique visits.
My question is, does anyone know anyways to get people to start signing up. They come, they read the stories, some get 12-20 page views (videos, stories, forum posts) - but only about 15 signups out of thousands of visits.
Anyone have any ideas on how to go no pay and get signups? I wanted to get no pay traffic, which I did, but to be honest, out of the total of maybe 20,000 uniques in 3 months or so, signing up .75 people per thousand isn't the most promising.
So, what's your idea?

IMO, backlinks are one of the best ways to drive traffic to your site.

Just a few ways to get traffic:

Optimize individual pages of your site and get them on the first page for keyword combinations that are not overly searched.

Bookmark each page of your site on every social bookmarking website on the net, especially StumbleUpon.

Make a video for YouTube with a call to action at the end.

Tell fellow bloggers to blog about your site.

Do something newsworthy and get talked about.
