company income tax is 30% (US = 35%)
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tax_rates_around_the_world

personal income tax comes in brackets
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tax_bra...s_in_Australia

but the government tends to spend money very effectively

Australia has very accessible medical and education infrastructure

I'm not sure how the Au cities and US cities compare in terms of housing affordability

Overall, Australia is a great place to raise kids

The highest income earners in the US pay 33% of their income in federal taxes. Many people pay no federal income tax. The top 50% of all income earners pay 97% of all federal income taxes (note: this does not include state or local taxes). Granted the government does not pay for healthcare in the US, but many would argue the quality of care is better in the US. The Aussie govnt might spend there money well, but in America the govnt is notorious for spending on pet projects ( ie. the bridge to nowhere).

Im not knocking Australia, Im sure its awesome. In fact, I cant wait to visit. Still, its hard to deny how many people, if given the chance, would move to America in a heartbeat.

I've been looking over those lists recently and was surprised to find that India ranks pretty low.

Everything else I've read has said that India is an easy place to setup a business (Including anti double taxation laws with U.S., limited start-up capital required, etc.) I was surprised to see them "ranked" so low.

Any ideas on why this would be the case?

    here are the reasons:

    http://www.doingbusiness.org/Explore.../?economyid=89

the various local government laws make it difficult to "obtain necessary licenses and permits, completing required notifications and inspections, and obtaining utility connections".

    this drags down the ranking

taxation also scores a severe fail grade.........upto 81% gets taken by gov

    Indicator India Region OECD
    Payments (number) 59 30.1 15.3
    Time (hours) 264 304.6 202.9
    Total tax rate (% profit) 81.1 45.1 47.8

Financialy, Au maybe a good place to be, but I have seen enough Discovery specials on the worlds most deadly animals, snakes, insects, and spiders to know that Australia is not the place for me!

    Or is it funnel weavers?

Anyway, you got a point. But believe it or not, I've never been shot at! I lived in the Bronx for over a year (lots of gunshots, but none at me...that I was aware of).

Violence, like the funnel weavers, are found in somewhat specific areas. Life goes on.

no no, you were right the first time

funnel web spiders..I've got one in my backyard named charlie

we also get colonies of especially dangerous jellyfish this time of year

they're called blue bottle...they don’t kill, unlike our other jelly fish, but this is what happens when you unsuspectedly swim into a bluebottle's 6m long tentacle....

the welt cuts across the body like scalding hot metal, and then you gotta get dowsed in vinegar for the damn animal to let go of you

sometimes people go into shock if they swim into a pack of these things....but obviously, this is nothing compared to stepping on a sea urchin

And that's why I don't like the ocean!

Hounestly, though, I have contemplated the idea of moving to Australia.

PS Say hi to Charlie for me!

what about the stone fish? you can't see it until you step on it and then you have a few minutes or something like to say your last goodbyes

or the kangaroo, so cute but can kick your head in with one swift blow.

or the bloody imported camels, who have taken out that many cars in the outback.

    yeh I love this place.

To the dude who said people would move to America in a heart-beat, thats true, as it is true of pretty much all Western countries. America is the biggest so gets the most interest
