A few days ago The White House granted Swaave.com a couple of press passes to cover the Town Hall Meeting. However, I figure that a thousand media sources cover the issues, but nobody really covers the event. So, I thought why not try and talk about my actual experience and share my day with you guys?
I have been to a few of these sorts of occasions before, but this is the first time to ever go behind the scenes and see how the entire operation comes together.
The day started when we went to go drop off our camera's with the secret service at 7 a.m. even though doors didn't open until 11. You could already feel the anticipation as White House staff is hustling around to get last minute things in order.
When we headed back to the arena at around 11:05 the line to get into the building was already stretching around the block. Luckily enough for us, our press passes meant that we could skip in front and sneak in a back door!
After passing through security that matched any airport, we walked through the back halls and got to see the white house news room set-up in one of the back rooms of the building, with the presidents staff walking all around.
Once we made it to the actual arena it was crazy to see the rest of the media correspondents in action. It was a dog eat dog world on the floor of the gymnasium as everybody is fighting to get interviews with the business leaders, celebrities and politicians in attendance.
As the crowd started to poor in the intensity in the air began to build. When Vice President Biden came out the crowd of 3,000+ went crazy...then as he started winding down his speech and getting ready to introduce the next guest that crowd of 3,000+ felt more like 10,000 as Biden says the two words everybody was waiting for, "President Obama!"
After seeing the two of them together, it is little surprise that they won the election, as they are both two great speakers, knowing exactly how to drive the crowd. In all reality, it felt like an international superstar had entered the room, not the stereotypically boring President of The United States. In fact, when the Town Hall was over and Obama worked the crowd I witnessed two college students break into tears as they stood in front of President Obama and shook his hand!
All in all it was a great day, and another amazing experience in the life of a swaave young professional. We always get to see the end product whenever we turn on the T.V., but we don't see the hours and hours of hard work that goes into covering an hour long speech!
