Become an Effective Listener – 7 Ways to Improve Your Listening Skills

Listening is a skill that is often overlooked. I believe it should be a class in High School just like keyboarding or speech class. It definitely is a skill needed in all areas of life whether is talking to new clients, prospects or listening to your partner, family member or friend. Most of all I believe it is a great skill to have if you're in business. So here are 7 ways to improve your listening skills.

7 Ways to Improve Your Listening Skills

    1. Encourage silence.
Wait a minimum of 3 seconds before responding. This not only motivates the other person to say more but it provides you with enough time to respond and shows you were listening.

    2. Do not interrupt.
IT’S ANNOYING. Even if you know exactly what the other person is going to say, you’ll learn more by listening than showing off how smart you are. You not only demonstrate interest but it will allow the other person to say things you need to know.

    3. Listen with an open mind.
Stop judging other people before listening to what they have to say. When you listen with judgment you are invalidating the other person based on what you perceive.

    4. Make sure the other person feels heard.
There is an immense line between feeling listened to and feeling heard. We rarely make those around us feel heard.

    5. Listen for a solution.
Spend more time listening for a solution rather than dwelling on the problem.

    6. Learn to listen below the surface.
What is being implied is often more important than what is being said.

    7. Do not be defensive.
We as humans have a natural tendency to resist new information that conflicts with our beliefs. Focus on what is being said instead of formulating it.

    Remember,
All that people want is to be heard and acknowledged.

How important do YOU think listening is in business and in building relationships?
