Question Australian living in New York - business ideas/export stuff?

hey... I recently moved to New York City as my wife was relocated for a job. I'm trying to think of a way to make a few extra $$ on the side. Selling stuff... exporting stuff.

Its funny when you don't live in the US you always come across stuff online you think "damn thats much cheaper in the US". Now I'm here... I can't think of what those things were.

Any ideas??

Cheers!

You should have written it down.

When I lived in San Francisco a dozen years ago, there was an Aussie expat who ran a little store that sold Australian goods, mainly food but other stuff too. Violet Crumble is excellent stuff, by the way. There's a group of Englishwomen in Sacramento who run a British food store and fish n chips restaurant. Sacramento also has Eastern European ethnic markets, catering to the huge Slavic population.

There's a lot of money in "white ethnic" stores selling stuff from Europe and other not so obvious places like Australia. The downside is that most of them are run by the owner, he opens up in the morning and closes in the evening, he cleans (and in the case of the Brits, cooks) and orders and everything else.

One thing you could look into is selling electronics from Europe and Oz, many of them have unique designs that would be appealing to niche markets in the US such as the artsy types and "emos". Clothing is another idea. Music, too. Take a look at IKEA stores, that guy made zillions by selling European style furniture on the assemble it yourself discount store model. The art and emo types worship IKEA furniture, although in truth it's not much better than what you get at Wal Mart in overall build quality.
