Do you think Ezine holds as much weight as before? To me it seems like it's not AS important to have an article on Ezine.

Ezinearticles is near the top of the list, their sites getts loads of traffic every month, the links are 'dofollow' and they rank high and fast in the search engines.
ArtictleBase is another I have found ranks high and fast too however the link is a "donotfollow"
GoArticles is also another great article directory

In reality there are loads of directories you can and should be submitting your articles, Iy asked for free places so i assume you don't want to spend money however it is easier to use software like UAW or SEnuke to submit and distribute your articles around the internet.

I would also suggest submitting your articles to document sharing sites like scribd or docstoc these sites also gets loads of traffic and they also rank good. I would submit your article to ezine first as they are very stricked about duplicate content however once it is approavel there i simply take the same article and submit it to the other directories, now i know there are going to be poeple who kick and scream about duplicate content however I have got articlebase article ranking on first page of Google and that article was simply copied and pasted from my ezine article submittion. This has happened to many iof my friends too so the whole thing about duplicate content I am not exactly sure, if fact I don't really care that much, I just care about what works and gets results.

Ezine is the biggest article directory, but it is certainly not the only one you should target. Here is a list of the top 50 article directories. I would suggest trying out about 10 or 12 of them, see who gives you the best results, then submitting to 5 or 6 on a regular basis. Personally, I've had success with Go Articles, Articles Base, Amazines, Idea Marketers, and Article Snatch - but you may see success with totally different sites.

A couple of tips for you -- submit to directories that allow you to have a user profile. That way, you can put your link in your profile, and it counts as an additional backlink. Plus, readers like it if they "get to know you" via your profile and picture.

Second, only use directories that give you article stats. Without those stats, you have no idea how many people are viewing your stuff, and which subjects are working. I've had articles about SEO that have done great on certain directories, and on others, SEO-themed articles get very few clicks. It all depends on the directory. I check my stats, see which topics are doing well, then tailor my submissions accordingly.

My 2 favorites is ezinearticles and ArticleBase. Both of these 2 sites I find get ranked well in the search engine and get good traffic. I also use others like GoArticles and A1 Articles but I do not find that they work quite as well.

But if you're wanting to do article marketing in a big way, I would either find someone or some software to have your articles submitted to many dirrectories because there really are hundreds of different sites out there that will accept an article.

Ezine is what i've always used...I've done squidoo, but its not really just an article directory but brings in traffic. It seems these are outdated methods and you can get links back to your site just as easy, but you have to be more creative.
