Article in Fortune Today About Potential Web 2 Bubble Bursting

Really good article that says that with the recent flat reports for Google and other not so good reports for others like FaceBook and social networking in general we could be seeing with a recession the bursting of the Web 2 bubble very shortly.

    Worth the read.

I've heard the same thing and I find it hard to believe. I mean, I haven't read the article you are specifically discussing but I think that what may be more likely is that the bubble is starting to asymptote to its maximum size. Look at young adults (I include myself in this catagory) who are dependent on sites such as Facebook for contacts. I don't have roladex... I have Facebook. If I lose my account, I will lose contact with hundreds of people I know. I'm certainly not going to stop using the site any time soon.

On the flipside, there is beginning to be a market saturation of web 2.0 apps, which is frightening for developers. Why does this have to mean that web 2.0 is over? This sort of thing has been seen before and it just opens the playing field for innovators. Look at a site like IMVU: 3D Avatar Chat Instant Messenger & Dress Up Game, a 3D social networking site. This hasn't even officially launched and is just starting to build up users. It's too new to really appeal to mass numbers of people but that doesn't mean it won't.

I think it's more likely that we're on the bridge between the web2.0 and web 2.01. The innovations that will carry this internet phase onwards are just beginning to be created while there is a saturation point of the ones that drove the initial boom.

But what do I know... either way, I think it's going to be an interesting next few years in the tech world .
