Approaching a business to buy

Hi Gurus,
I am interested in a business(basically domain) but they are not for sale.
Is it good idea to talk to the owner directly or go though agent like godaddy?
Have any one did this before earlier?
Thanks in advance for your ideas.

What do you mean they are not for sale? Have you looked up the owners under WhoIs and asked them directly if they want to sell?

I have done this several times. First, if the domain has been reserved without an active site up you have rights to claim because the company is just squatting. Usually most of these companies will sell the domain and if you force the issue will do so at a relative inexpensive price. I always work with the company first and not an agent.

Are there other domain names similar to your ideal company name? You may be able to find a derivative that is available to be registered.

Where are you getting this info? I do not believe you are correct. You can own a domain and not have a site up for it. Anyone else want to jump in here?

I think you are correct Roger. The last I read you can own a domain without content of a site. I know people that own several domains, with no site.

By derivative you mean little different right? I think it won't work according to trademark law as far as I know, I may be wrong though.
So, for example if you can get a domain like 123microsoft.com or 360google.com,
they can sue you for that and ask you shutdown the domain.
Please correct me gurus if I am wrong.
