anyone have any info/experience on LED billboards (video billboards)

i was looking to buy a video billboard for around 12k...i was thinking maybe i can place it on a rooftop along a very busy highway (the rooftops are at an adjacent height to the highway, and not very far off). its actually a pretty popular spot. there are hundres of billboards along the roof tops , but maybe only 1 or 2 VIDEO billboards..

i was thinking of maybe paying the owner of the building a monthly fee for letting me use his roof, and as i do that, i charge small business to avdertise for them . during the morning and late afternoon there is a ton of traffic. so people often sit still on the highway staring at billboards...im thinking this place could be perfect

if anyone has any info or experience with video billboards, or actually owns one..would you mind sharing your thoughts on it? is it a good business to get into?

    thanks

I've only done research for a past joint venture, but the flexibility and results are astounding. Not having to go to press with each ad change, but rather emailing a image was the #1 reason we considered this media.

From the owners perspective, she was was able to offer us a spot on a 12 sec rotation in an awesome location for rates the printed board owners in the area wouldn't even entertain - so the cost per ad was less and the concept of a fully lit image at night just made this option, like.. "wow"!

We never went down the route of actually using the LED board, instead opting for social media, which proved sufficient for our goals, but it was my #1 pick for billboard media.

If you have the resources to secure one or two, go for it. I have no doubt they will bring great returns.

I'm in the the digital signage industry, the only thing I would recommend you is to take a different approach as how you use the billboard, specially if you only plan on having one as your service. On the average city there are over 5 competitors, and chances are as you said, there are plenty of billboard from each competitor in your respective spot. Unless you bring something new or different yo the table you wont be able to gain the maximum profit potential, or much less compete against the industry leaders in your area.

Do a bit more research, it's actually a bit more complicated that just placing a billboards and waiting for businesses to buy ad space. When you make a contract to rent the space, you will have to pay the monthly fee even if you don't sell any space. Also there is actually no moving video, state regulations only allow to display static images but change in 6-8 seconds intervals.(in most states)

Change your approach because big advertisers are more likely to deal with big agencies that have lots of variety and number of billboards, they make deals and save by contracting large numbers.

Either way, its an exciting industry to be in, but keep in mind that during this times entering this over saturated market is going to be interesting.

Good luck! Feel free to ask me any questions, Ill be glad to help. BTW, I dont want this post to sound negative, just thought I would make you research more and see your options! By all means go ahead!

    thanks so much everyone!

im not exactly sure where to begin. i was thinking of buying a used one that i saw off of ebay. from there what do i do exactly? just go up to the owners of peoperty and ask if i can put my billbaord on their property for a monthly fee? (assuming the laws permit me to)

or am i missing something? im sure its more complicated than that. it always is!

I would suggest first off you find a person who is willing to have the billboard on their rooftop. Once that is done, and you have checked the legal side of that, you need to work out your finances:
What will installation of a big billboard on a roof cost you?
    What are maintenance costs?
Will you insure it against damage?
What are the prices that other billboards charge? Can you afford to beat them?
What will the property owner want as rent for their roof space?
How long can you afford to have the billboard sitting there without advertising on it (if noone rents it from the start)?

Once that is all sorted, then it is time to check out buying the billboard, as you need to know if it is possible to be profitable first.

Hope it goes well, its an area I am interested in.

Let alone how many people will glance the billboard in the highway, I think it may be a problem people can not see clearly when they drive in the highway.
And just as terrycan said, you'd better check rules in your place first.
Anyway, billboard is a nice idea for advertising. I like to watch it, as long as it is interesting and makes sense.

Check local ordinances for regulations on digital signage. Some cities may not allow digital billboards within city limits, or they may have regulations regarding the proximity of other digital signs. There is a forum dedicated to the digital signage industry just do a quick google search. I have thought of a digital signage network built into random locations such as restaurant tables, hotel front desks, and within hotel rooms. There is a good amount of capital needed to launch this type of venture for sure.
