Another "Why Not?" Thread: Hitching Technology
Public/Mass Transit serves many purposes for a city/metropolis.
The two main thing that come to mind are:
1) Reduction in Traffic Congestion
2) Reduction in pollution if the transit system is low-emission.
I think the top reasons people do not take public/mass transit are:
1) You cannot get to the desired location.
2) Takes a lot longer to get to the same location through public/mass transit.
Imagine, however, if there were a standard way to quickly have personal vehicles (preferably without really needing to stop) to "hitch" into a mass-transit system.
It could be appropriately spaced platfroms on a mag-lev system; don't get hung-up of the word "hitch."
This is another one of the things that seems like technology already exists, but a mass commercial appeal of it has not happened.
Why not?
It may still take longer, but it seems like relaxing in an auto-transit system, till you stop/exit is reached is better than sitting in traffic.

Seems more like a government project then something any individual entity could carry out.

Yes. But Governments do contract work, do they not?

So why has no engineering company pitched an idea good enough to be bid for contracts?

Huge barrier on the capital costs to design, build, operate it.
Americans love their cars, wide adoption is a tough one
Building the infrastructure into already dense city cores would be tough, and long
Just a few thoughts on why it hasn't happened. Same reasons monorails aren't flying all over town.

Well, big cities have a lot of people willing to pay for public transit.
However, they don't because it doesn't get as close to where they want to go as they want.
This seems like over-kill, but it is still going forward.
Seems like a much simpler, cheaper, system can be designed.
