Why do you want to get into affiliate marketing and advertising? Do you have a site that generates lots of traffic? If so, then you can get into those. If not. Then you cant. In order to get into Affiliate marketing and advertising you will need to generate traffic. Therefor you should focus on "attraction". The reason why is because you need to attract people somewhere in order to show off your ads and make that commission. In other words a football game on TV is an "attraction". Millions of people watch it. So if you have all those people watching it, it makes sense to put ads on TV and around the stadium because people will see them and buy those advertised products. So my point is you need an attraction of some sort to get people to your web site. Once they are there only then you will get the opportunity to make money through affiliates and advertising. My advice is that you should get into trying to generate traffic to a site before you start thinking about making money online. Once you have traffic there is unlimited ways to make money not just and affiliate marketing and advertising.

Or you could not pay attention to Denis and actually get into it in a myriad of ways, because it doesn't solely rely on having a website, and it doesn't solely rely on selling space on that site for ads.

So long as you can advertise, you can make money through affiliate marketing.
Some people use direct PPC, like Google's AdWords, or the ads in MySpace.
Others create landing pages, and direct traffic to them.
The deep thinkers manage to get subscribers to their blogs and email lists.
You occasionally even get people that go guerrilla and manage to do it by amazingly unconventional means, such as Bluetooth messaging or QRcodes.

I'm a part time manager at a small affiliate network.
We have a few different pay per sale products.
The guy on our network who is our biggest earner doesn't have a single website. Hem makes his money by simply forwarding URLs, and he has about 12,000 of them that he's slowly built up over the last dozen years or so.\
Our second biggest earner doesn't have any of his own sites either. He rents space on other people's sites that DO have big traffic.

These guys pull in 4-5 figures a week from this.
Not saying you can expect that any time soon, they have literally been doing online marketing for a decade. What I AM saying is htat you don't actually need a site or your own traffic at the beginning, so long as you can think outside of the box.

N.B.: A blog is the worst way to do this, unless you've got something going for it.

thanks harvey. I'm actually interested in starting an actual affiliate company. I really am interested in the business model of value click. I've been researching a great young entrepreneur named Gurbaksh Chahal and how he did what he did. I'm very interested in this but just dont know how i would break into the market and provide the services that a compnay like value click provides.

@HarveyJ very true in what you say,you dont even require a website for affilate marketing.I use Commision Junction and affiliatewindow and clickbank is fantastic when used with adwords you can laser pinpoint a customer to a product. What i do is have 3-4 good domain names then use that in the adwords campaign and then re-direct then to product page.
