Advice on starting a magazine business

I've got my mind set on starting up a magazine, but I want to do it well. Can't give out much info on the topic of the magazine due to confidentiality issues. Just looking for general advice from people who know what they're talking about.

    Thanks

I like you already because of your Ferrari Shield. BUT many many many magazines have gone out of biz this year. Online is killing the newspaper and magazine industry. This is very high risk because of this. But you may be able to purchase one of these dead magazines for very little and throw your own spin on it.

It's all about having a niche. The standard protocol for publishing a magazine involves using advertising to make money and subscriptions to break even. Expense wise, expect to spend 33% on content or fees you pay writers and editors and employees, 33% on publishing, and 33% on distribution. What you can save in any area should be spent on marketing.

My sugguestion is that you start small with a free e-newsletter and build up a following.

I agree. I would definitely try to build up a following. It's so hard for magazines to make it now because of the online world. Niche magazines can be better because people care more about them and are willing to actually purchase the hard copy.
