    Advertising your business on forums

I just wanted some backup on my thought that advertising on forums is rarely effective. Especially with the way people seem to advertise on here a lot of the time - they will just post on every forum topic saying things like "go to this website, it's great and everything is selling out super fast - it's THISWEBSITE DOT COM." or something like that.

I just wanted to make my opinion known - and surely a lot of you feel the same, that this form of marketing is just a complete waste of time, infact it makes people turn away from your website rather than go towards it.

If you are going to market your business on online forums, you need to do it carefully. Post relevant comments to people, don't just go on and advertise. Stick your advertisement in your forum signature and don't make it too over the top - if you are helpful and polite, people will probably view your website just by clicking on your signature. No-one will view your website if you just shout about it on irrelevant forum topics.

Anyone feel the same, or have anything to add?

Entrepreneurs: How do you plan to market your product or service? What methods do you think are best? Which ones do you use now or have used in the past? What were the results? Which will you use in the future, and why? This should be interesting.

Milkerz- I absolutely agree with you. I think a highly effective way of using the forum is by posting valuable content to the users and answering their questions. If you have a blog, and it talks about something relevant to the thread, feel free to throw a link into it.

But blatantly spamming is bad and it does turn people away.

I don't see anything wrong with signature links. Too bad they don't seem to work on this site though.
