    Action Upload announced.

Today I bought the domain name actionupload.com

It is going to be a media sharing website catered to action sports such as BMX, Skateboarding, Motocross, Surfing, etc.

The idea behind it is to offer a creative outlet for these individuals to upload THEIR videos to increase their exposure.

    Think YouTube meets EXPN.

The site will be sectioned in different categories for the different genre of sports, but will also offer articles directly related to action sports film making, equipment reviews, etc.

There would be an option of yearly paid Premium Memberships, which would give those particular users added functionality including the option of having a direct link to their files, a link that would NOT stream the video on my site, but rather give a file for that user (or others) to download like a .avi file or something similar. Premium members also see less or no ads, and would have a special marking within the community.

The ads on the site would be specific to the particular category they're in. Example: BMX ads would not appear in the Skateboarding section, etc.

This is my first real "passion project", and what better way to kick off not only the new year, but a new decade with another step to being a full time entrepreneur?

I'll keep you guys and gals posted as development begins, as of now the domain has been registered and I have been doing my research on the matter and it looks good. I see that there is another similar site, but I am willing to go above and beyond to offer something new and better than what is available, while investing my own money into online ad campaigns that target the visitors I want/need.

Thanks, I thought about the server issue and if begin to exceed limits "unlimited" (but I know that really means unlimited within reason) then I will seek other options for hosting.

I am quite surprised I got that domain name to be honest. I spent a good hour trying different combinations of things that were direct and to the point, most domains with the word "file" "upload" "video" etc have been taken.

I did find another domain name that was available which I thought was interesting, and if someone here doesn't beat me to it I may buy it too, thatmediasite.com

I did look at a few scripts on HotScripts late last night, but I have yet to tinker with any of them. I may actually suck it up and purchase something that I know will be stable, come with some sort of tech support if something crashes, and fit my needs better.

Where do you host your file sharing website? I take it that has a pretty big server impact as well?

Have you researched how many visits per upload Youtube gets? That is a telling metric... The problem you will face is that the site will appear to be stale, let's say for every 1,000 visitors your site gets 1 upload (you should research other video sites, including Youtube, and see if you can find out about how many visitors per upload, figure yours will be the same, maybe even more) - What's your strategic plan to get to 1,000 visitors? And more?

Love the passion, time to work hard to achieve your goal! Good luck!

Just a side note.. Of course we hope you reach the size of YouTube one day, in one of your ventures, but did you know YouTube's bandwidth bill last year was $700 MILLION?

I don't ever expect to reach the traffic or data usage of YouTube.

I was just using YouTube as an example, the videos uploaded would be of very specific categories unlike YouTube.

While this still has a lot of potential to be a high traffic, high resource using website, it will all work out in time. As of now, its being hosted on the host I use for two other dot coms.

And I have several other ideas as to what action!upload could potentially be.

We'll see how it goes, its just a side project that isn't my number one priority yet. Its my first go at making a website purely for profit.

Chad Hurley (Creator of YouTube) only makes $300 Million a year.

How could their bandwith bill be THAT high? I mean, I expect their data useage to be some unfathomable number but still, thats pretty wild!

It really is that high though.. trust me. I remember, before they sold YouTube to Google, the bandwidth costs were somewhere around 400 Million. I'd imagine they've grown since.

Edit: Actually I was reading an article just now. Apparently their bandwidth costs are about $400 Million a year and their total expenses are about $700 million a year.

Damn, thats incredible. Thats only about $700mil above my budget! Haha.

I think what i'll likely do is develop the website and script, work the kinds out, all of that stuff on my host right now. Then come official launch time, I will host on something more suitable for what I am wanting and then start the ad campaign.
