5 Things to Avoid if You Want to Rank High on Google
5 Things to Avoid if You Want to Rank High on Google
An effective website design not only is appealing to the eyes but also to the search engines. This is a list of the most common mistakes that web designers make and why they should be avoided at all cost.
Using tables for the layout
Use divs for layout, not tables. Tables add a lot of unnecessary code to your pages and search engines don’t like them.
Using frames
Don’t ever use frames. Google and Yahoo hate them. It’s a horrible way to structure a website.
Putting text inside images
Search engines can’t read the text inside a picture. You need content to rank high on the search engines and that means plain text.
Making the whole website in Flash
Flash is great for animations and some headers. But when your website is 100% Flash, there is no text for the search engines to read!
Not doing a basic optimization
All the content on a website needs to be optimized for the search engines. Put your keywords in the title, meta keywords tag, meta description tag, alt tags, and H1 and H2 tags. Get a sitemap that links to all the pages on your website. And never stop adding quality content.
Now, if you want a website that will rank high on search engines but don’t want to do it yourself or don’t know how to do it, look for a great web design agency that knows about Search Engine Optimization and can create an optimized website for you at no extra cost.
There are not a lot of them out there, but I am sure you can find one.

Thanks for the tips . I would just like to add that these tips will only make the website search engine friendly. To make your website rank higher on the search engines you need to do a lot more than this. I wish SEO was this easy. We would have got the top ranks in google. But, unfortunately getting a top rank on the search engines is very a herculean task. And remember..Google is not the only search engine. If you really want a website to perform always make is an all round performed on all the search engines like google, yahoo, windows live at least.

Of course this is not all you need to rank high on the search engines. But these are the basics as far as structuring a website.
If your website is 100% flash or has frames then the foundation is weak for SEO.
Have a good day!

you can use images with text... there is some code that you add the text in so google reads the code (text) instead of just treating it like an image that can't be indexed properl for the text

You can use an alt tag, but it is not nearly as good as having real text.

You can also use CSS image replacement to have a lot of image-based text on a page that is still treated as plain text by search engines.

I just have to be the one to pose the meta question of:
Doing due dilligence, and ideally choosing the right keywords to try and compete and rank high for in the first place.
But yeah, great checklist for beginning seo

Of course, keyword research is really important. When you choose your keywords, take these 3 factors into consideration:
1) Relevancy (keywords relevant to your business)
2) Search volume (number of people searching for that keyword per month)
3) Competition (number of websites competing for that keyword)
Have a great weekend.
