the messaging and profile are basically what constitutes a social networking site, at thats the core of a SN site.

I don't want to discourage you from going after this, there are some 3rd party Social Networking frameworks out there. I've personally not used them, but they may be a good alternative. You just have to be prepared to comprimise a bit as they aren't as flexible as "from scratch" code.

I also want to make sure you know what you're getting into when someone offers a site for $30k it may sound like a lot, and it is, but it's a low price for the type of site you're building. So while you may be expecting the royal treatment and a fabulous product, that development team may be thinging this is a get it in, get it out type job.

Way too high.

There's a boatload of premium dating site scripts out there.

Research your options and pay an Indian to customize it if you need to.

uhm yeah.....why dont you use an open source dating script and have post a contest on sitepoint.com for a coded custom template. You could do this for less than $1k

why not hire an outsource web developer so it cost you less. Try to post it on getafreelancer.com. I think Drupal and Joomla will able to do this.

You should absolutely use Drupal. It is more than suitable to setup the site that you are describing. The best part is that, if you hire a developer to install and setup Drupal for you, they wont need to code anything really so the manpower will drop dramatically. You could get your site up and running and looking professional for around $4000.

I know a guy who could do that for you, for right around that price. PM if you would like more information.

If you actually have a business plan/exec summary (and I hope you do), you can offer to bring on a web developer for equity. Obviously you'll need to present the web dev with the reasons you think/know this would be a success. After all, equity is nice, but it needs to give a return sooner or later.

im not looking to bring in anyne for equity just yet - me and my partners will evaluate all costs then pick the best price or best company for what we are looking for!!
