New and need ideas
hey, I'm new to this site, but more importantly entrepreneurship. I'm 17, in high school and I'm looking for a way to start making money. i don't want some crummy part time job, because in the long run its a waste of time. people always look back and say "if i only i knew 'this' or 'that' when i was 17, I'd be so much better off". could you guys give me some advice on what i could start doing now to make money in the short and long term?

Just want to welcome you here. Best of luck!
Do you have a capital or savings you could use?

Hello & Welcome,
I always say "what you do in the short term is for the long term." I believe a part time job is much more than that. It is real life experience.

Hi,
At 17, you shouldn't scrap the part time idea just yet. You have a lot to learn and working will give you lessons in being a team player, problem solving, maybe some leadership, and the value of every dollar earned.
School may not be a bad idea either. You should also consider getting into college. Everybody pays dues son, be a lifelong learner.

Have you read Ben's book? I was going to buy it, but I have about 3 books in line ahead of it. Is it any good?

Great aspiration, but not extremely realistic. Experience is one of the greatest assets you can have - How many CEOs do you know come straight out of acing the ACT v. how many CEOs do you know come out of 10-20-30 years in the business world?
I would gather that if you asked even the members of this site how they started out, the vast majority would say that they had some "crummy part time job." (Excluding of course writing a blog with adsense, or being a member of Yuwie.)
Get that crummy part time job, gain some experience, and save that money. THEN, when the right opportunity presents itself, you'll have the experience and finances to 1) recognize the opportunity and 2) take advantage of the opportunity.

Thanks every one for responding. I do plan to go to college but i need a way to pay for it. i dotn want to get 50k in student loans and have to pay them back after i get out of school, i feel that will slow me down. In that link you posted akula, one of the regrets was "I was so busy working to pay my way through school, I didn't get to do much extracurricular stuff."
i dont want to be that guy either. I've started up a little eBay thing with my sister right now, but its hard to a find consistent source of products (any tips). I hear about all these people making millions at so young, like the milliondollarhomepage guy, i want to be like that! can it really be that hard?
