I would say that most people have had failures while setting up in business and yes they dust them selves off and start all over again but try and learn from what went wrong in the 1st instance but 14 years is a hell of a long time to keep going on without getting it right.Have you ever sat down and tried to work out what has been going wrong and trying something differant ??? Good Luck for the future.

What type of business? Do you have a business plan and market research?

look into the grout cleaning business. i noticed you tried paint business, landscape gardening, this is in the same manual labour industry. start up costs are small, usually under 10K and lots of opportunities exist

    pm me for links

I don't know much about your situation, but if I were to guess what the problem was I would say you didn't stick to one thing long enough and you didn't research the market properly before entering. I could be wrong, but that's my guess.

    Yes, a ton.

But those service businesses you've listed are always viable (landscaping, painting), you just need to keep your profits and costs in check and make sure you're marketing correctly.
If you want to be rich, sell products and services.
If you want to be insanely rich, create and control markets.

I agree with the grout cleaning comment. Low startup, low overhead, high volume of business (especially in a down economy, people are fixing (or improving) the bathroom that they have instead of a complete renovation to stretch their $).

Keep at it.. In the end, you only fail if you stop trying...

Have you actually tried to start a business or have you just put a little effort into an idea? There is a huge difference. When I consult with people who are thinking about starting a company I can quickly tell the people who are ready to commit to making it happen from those who are just going about it half hearted.

To start a business you have to make your life 100% about the business. You have to let go of everything else. You have to be willing to commit 16 hour days.. 7 days a week... have you done that in the past? Be honest with yourself!

Starting and running a profitable company is not for everyone. I tried four times before I finally realized what I was doing wrong. You have to be willing to truly give it everything you have before you have any chance to succeeding.

Running a business is "easy" make sure you offer something people want, make sure you make them aware of your offer. I believe you have given it too little time, a business doesn't hit the moon in a month, nor necessarily a year.

Funny, I still think you should never quit trying. Just keep going, one day you'll find that special notch that most people just don't know about.

Thomas Edison said he didn't fail 10,000 times, he simply found 10,000 ways that didn't work.

Instead of switching businesses, try optimizing your business plan.
