I would suggest doing your homework on Ambit Energy. I was almost scammed by one of their reps, Bob Pearson. When I turned him in for his behavior, it was ignored by the executives. Then, another person came forward with the same story and still Chris Chamless ignored the potential scam.

When looking for electricity choices in Texas, NY & IL please be wary of Ambit Energy. Executives have been made aware that one of their reps, Bob Pearson, is soliciting potential reps for $5,000 - $10,000 in order for him to build their Ambit business. They claim this is against Ambit policies and even though more than one person has reported Mr. Pearson's tactics, they have chosen to let him stay in Ambit.

Hate to admit it, but I was also once a victim of a company who sold energy contracts by phone. They called me at the end of the day, when you are busy. I kinda agreed, but later on I read on the internet is was not a real scam, but most of the people who joined had switchover problems, and also most of them didn't even pay less.
Lucky for me, I responded fast, and I cancelled it the same day.
But to be honest, there are others do business correctly and let you pay less. Like oxxio in The Netherlands.
