Late bloomer

I'm Erica, 21, New Jersey raised, and a graduate of massage therapy school. I have been developing ideas for my own business in this industry while working in an unrelated field and generally getting settled into a new life.

As part of generating realistic ideas, I've been completing online courses and receiving information online (mainly from the Small Business Association). And I think I'm ready to try and communicate my plans. Hopefully I'll get the criticism and advice I'll need to bring my dreams to life.

Thanks

Welcome to YE! I wouldn't say 21 is late but I'm right there too. I am getting ready to pitch my ideas to some sponsors/investors. I am also about to become affiliated with another company working on a similar project.

The best way to learn business is to work with business owners. I have learned more from networking and trying things out than anything else.

Hi,

Cool to see that you are putting so much thought into what you are doing before you start. Since you are I thought I'd ask you this question, "Is the business you are going to communicate your plans for something that you'd do for fun even if you weren't getting paid?"

Seriously, ask yourself that. Why? I use to own a profitable advertising business that I had a love/hate relationship with. I read a book called Big Bucks by Ken Blanchard that said, "If you aren't getting paid to have fun all day you are wasting your life." He was right. I just wish I'd gotten that advice BEFORE I spent all those years starting and building my business.

And I'm not saying, "don't get paid" I'm just saying that because it's a great way to really test out of you'd be really having fun or just convincing yourself you would.

Have fun,

Namaste

Just a note Erica-

You should focus on marketing to high income/luxury areas in your surroundings, that will have the ability to still indulge in such economic times as these. Golf Club Houses, Higher end salons (that do not offer massages), even office parks where the company may wish to offer this service to their employees, etc.

Just a thought.

Hi Erica! Welcome!

You know, I have recently seen a huge push in my area involving massage therapy. Several new people joined a newtorking group I belong to. Here's what they do;
-Ask if anyone would like to host a realaxation day at their work.
-Come to that persons work for FREE (yes, free)
-Give short massage/aroma demo to the office staff

Obviously they ask for future business afterwards, but what a GREAT way to spread the word about their practice. The guy or girl in the office that set up the relaxation day looks great in their peers' eyes, the office staff feels appreciated, and you get your name out and win business
