I am new to the site

I am a 21 year old female that is new to the site. I am trying to start my own clothing line and I have no idea where to start. I know what kind of clothes I want to design, the age range that I am targeting, but I am pretty much stuck at that point. If you have any suggestions please write me.

How you start depends on the amount of capital you have. Assuming you don't have much, it's likely you'll have begin with a home-brew deal, making your clothes by hand and/or having assistance. You can sell to independent retailers or have your own e-shop (at first). Get the clothes made first off; let people see.

welcome
the design business works on an apprenticeship and succession basis
young designers become apprentices to older designers who need someone to pass their knowledge and assets to

at some stage, after being apprenticed, the older designer helps the younger designer make a debut and everything works out fine
on another hand, young designers who have not been apprenticed by brand name designers, fail to break into the industry (for a lot of reasons, and save some rare exceptions)

give me a list of 10 designers who you'd like to apprentice and you can move forward to realizing your dream
if you don't know 10 designers who you admire, then you're not ready to seriously consider a career in design

Hi Miss22billion, I just joined this site today(7-1-08) for the same reason. I too am interested in fashion designing and starting my own business. I know how to draw really well, but i'm currently teaching myself how to sew. I'm not a beginner, more like intermediate. but i'm still having a hard time sewing. I've wanted to start a home tailoring business, but I want to get a little better at it first. I know how to hem clothes, etc...but I want to do it like a professional. Then I've thought about an at home fashion illustration business, but I wouldn't even know how that would turn out, considering not too many people are looking for that in Columbia, SC. My main dream is to start a fashion designing business, but that's years from now after I get a degree& everything. Please tell me everything you know about starting your business that you're curently working on. I'm very interested in what you're doing!
Thanks,
michellet218
