Hello all
If I am not mistaken I first registered for YE back in 2005, shortly after founding my first company, Smarter Housing Limited.
Our ethos was simple: raise the standard of student accommodation. With a focus on the best properties, no letting fees and free wireless internet in all of our properties, the company quickly grew into one of the biggest student letting agencies in the West Midlands.
Sadly, in 2008 I found myself in a messy divorce and took my eye off the ball. 18 months later the company went belly up in some style: a financial hole of more than £200,000.
In a nutshell, our accounts weren't being consolidated and as such non-payers weren't being identified. Over time people realised this was the case and simply stopped paying their rent. As an example of how ridiculous this became, we had a group of 6 girls living in the flat ABOVE OUR OFFICE for two years. After year one, they were short by one month (the last one). They didn't pay a single penny in the second year.
The majority of this money has now been recovered however I am still working with former clients to provide evidence in County Court claims for those tenants who have refused to pay up.
I've posted an initial "what happenned" to my blog (here) but will add more details in the coming months.
During 2011 I got my life back in order and now find myself giving SEO training and support to young entrepreneurs at a number of local universities. As a continuation of this trend, I will get involved with YE during 2012 in the hope that sharing my experiences will help some of you to avoid making such a spectacular balls up of your own businesses
Speak soon!
Adam
