dont start a forum, there are better options
the only reason why we have a forum is because we haven't gotten around to getting rid of it
look at what the world's most successful community sites are..
    they are not forums

Do you have any idea how successful a forum can be?

Forums make money? I set up a forum when I was like 13 and only made $14 in google ad-sense. Forums have to be very very popular and have alot of traffic to make any possible profit. I wouldn't recommend you go into the forum business if your looking for any type of income.

Anyways, Welcome and stuff, its nice to meet you!

Well as far as the investments vs the profits it's good. A forum can pull in many page views a month. Also link that up with a 'shop' depending on the niche and you can bring in the money.

    PS: A 13 year old making $14 isn't bad . Better than I did when I was 13!

lol, I never set up the forum with the intention to make money from it, it was just something to do when I was bored.

Although I hate to brag, but I made way more then $14 when I was 13, that's just the amount I made from my forum.

And the whole having a shop for your niche is a pretty good idea, I've come across forums that sell goodies like t-shirts etc, in return making a profit and promoting the forum (on the t-shirts) not sure how much you can turn over from that idea though.

I actually know of someone that runs a site for fixing appliances and there is a spot to search for parts to buy and that brings the money for him. Also yes selling hats and shirts can help. Also just a small idea I got while reading your post: Open a forum for different art forums and have contests for shirt designs and the winners have their shirts made. You can then get some great designs to sell for real on various sites and to the members. Just randomly thought of that...

Depends what you like to do. If you like typing up stories or instructions to do something than go with a blog. If you prefer to talk with people more casually and dealing with users than go the forum route.
