Fashion designer wannabe:can draw but can't sew that well
Hello,
My name is Michelle and I'm a 23 year old living in Columbia, SC. My dream for the past 13 years was to become a fashion designer. I'm currently attending college so that I can persure my dream one day. I can draw really REALLY well, and my family, friends, and even people I just met always tell me that I draw like a professional fashion designer. I have a portfolio, and many sketch books that I draw my designs in, but the problem is that my sewing skills aren't that good. I've taken up a sewing class, but I didn't learn as much as i wanted so I've been teaching myself for about 3 yrs now. I have succedded in about 3 pieces of clothing that I made, but have also failed more than that. I know sewing takes time to learn, that's why I continue to try and learn from my mistakes. I have found out from other people, television, and common sense in the past years that it's harder to get a job in fashion designing if you can't sew. Mainly people look for people that can draw and sew, but I can only draw better than I can sew. Well, my question is do you know where I can look to find someone that doesn't care if I can't sew? Anybody just looking for a non-sewing fashion designer (ha ha!) or fashion illustrator at the time? I tried looking online, and at google.com, but there's nobody close by. Preferrably in South Carolina, Georgia, or North Carolina. It's harder for me because South Carolina isn't known for fashion, unlike NY, L.A., FL, etc... I'm thinking about moving to Georgia years from now when I can afford it, but until then, CAN I GET A BREAK FOR NOW??? If you know anything, any piece of information, ANYTHING, please please please let me know. Thanks so much!

I have been in the industry for years , and I can tell you this much the best way to get your talent out to the mass is to promote it all over the web, get your drawing scanned on the computer then send personal emails to every person who you feel could help your carrier even celebrity's I wouldn't go for people like J lo but send someone like Kelly Roland a email with you're design you would be surprised because they do read there emails I remember back in the day I would just email any body i could find on the net, that was one reason I got connected.. just a lil advice !

Thank you for the info! I've thought about doing something similar to that (not on the web) but I'm just so scared that someone might still my designs! I've read that that is kind of like a rule for upcoming fashion designers: to be careful who you show your work to because you can't trust everyone. Do you think it'll be a good idea to get a patent? do you know how I would go by getting a piece of clothing patented? I will definitely give your advice a try, tho. Are you in the fashion industry?

Sorry but no, fashion designing has been my dream for far too long. That's what I'm good at. I just might be good at other things, too, but I'm good at fashion designing and I love to do it. It's the best thing that's happened to me! LOL

It sounds like you have lots of designs. so if you took a few and sent them out for the following season. it should not hurt if they are used. and if a company uses them they will probable want more and contact you for them. you need be prepared for the time sensitive work you aspire to do, and always work on new design as things fall out of style. so next season your current designs might not work. so no real lose. but you will get some good contacts from sending them out.
good luck.

I think I'll try that, because my problem is I don't take risks. But because I don't, I'm not getting no where. I have to take chances, because that's what the fashion industry provides of. So I really have to consider doing what ya'll are talking about. What companies should I target? Like a clothing store maybe? Or should I target a big and famous fashion designer's company? What about a modeling agency, do you think they'll help?

Hi Michelle
Try thinking outside the box
YOU are a great designer who can't sew - find a GREAT sewer who can't draw - POOL your talents and both of you win.
Hope your success comes soon, as if you have had many failures so far and you are still in the game - then you are so close to your true success.
