    I was fired today

I'm an entrepreneur trying to get my software company off the ground, but in the meantime need to support myself and was "let go"from my job today after only being there a couple of months. The way they did it was extremely shitty and the owner threw in a parting shot saying "I didn't have any potential as a software developer." I left with dignity and professionalism and to be honest i wasn't even bothered by the fact I was "let go". This could be the man upstairs kicking my ass into full gear! I started to get a little sad a couple of minutes ago, who wants to be told they don't have potential? I may not be the best developer out there but I can run circles around anyone when it comes to business. So I am looking for some encouraging words of support. I've never been fired from a job before and want to turn this into a positive.

Thank you for having the courage to post the truth. It is great that the first place you came to is YoungEntrepreneur.com, it says alot about who you are as a person and who you want to become as a professional. Things like this always happen for a good reason and you will find this reason in the coming months maybe even sooner.

Based on your previous posts it sounds like you were treading water at your job anyway so it's probably a good thing for you that you were forced out and now can focus on doing something more productive wit your time :-).

As the saying goes, when one door closed another opens so good luck in whatever new venture you get involved with!

gC - when you deal with people, in any walk of life, you can be influenced by them or you can influence them. It is always your choice which outcome you want to have. Your potential at being a software developer,or anything else you choose to be, is in your hands. If you believe you can do it and you want to do it then you will do it. Believe. Stay strong. Picture the comments from your ex boss bouncing off you and falling to the ground like drips of water.

When you meet a person who says they can do something and another person that says they can't do something they will both probably be right.

Let know one tell you what you are or are not only you can control that.

Many successful people failed miserably before they went on to become legends. One of Winston Churchills famous quotes is Success is the ability to go from failure to failure without losing your enthusiasm. Churchill himself struggled in school and failed the sixth grade. After school he faced many years of political failures, as he was defeated in every election for public office until he was in his sixties. So take this as the right step to a prosperous future.

Sorry to hear you were "let go". So now, plan what you want accomplished this year and next...or for the next 10. Right a detailed action plan on how you are going to get there. You have the time, get started and good luck!!

oh yeah, make sure you enjoy it and you are doing it for the right reasons.... and hopefully this was all part of the plan.

I just love your first reaction--that "this is the man upstairs kicking my butt into gear"!!

It sounds like your old boss was just purposefully trying to be hurtful, and that only speaks to him. If he has that kind of negativity inside, then he did you a huge favor by only forcing you to be around him for a few months there. Just smile, and start working on your own stuff--with an attitude that kick-ass, you can do anything.

I think we have all been there, but if you work for it, things will improve.

Here is a motivating video that can help when times are hard: YouTube - Famous Failures

There will always be someone that doesn't like you or what you do. But as an entrepreneur or someone who is destined to be successful you keep on going.

First of all - great that you came here for support. You'll need it as you figure out how to turn your skills into a business.

The first thing you should do is contact everyone you've ever worked with in a developer capacity. Talk to as many people as you know about the fact that you need a job so that you can see what's out there. If you're not the best developer out there, you might want to take classes in the meantime and read books to become the best.

If I were you, that comment about not having potential is just fuel for the fire. Take that comment and show your boss they were wrong.

I am so sorry to hear you were let go. I know how hard that can be to your ego, but please do not let it get you down!
No matter where you go, you will always run into people who will put you down out of spite or jealousy, or just to make themselves feel better.
Just stick to your guns and keep your dreams alive, and you will succeed.
Sometimes things that seem bad at the time can actually open up new opportunities that you may never have come across had you kept working there

I have found that whenever a door slams shut in my face it is only because there is an even better opportunity about to open up. Just like you said, this could be God's way of kicking your butt in gear to focus on your business. Hungry entrepreneurs are the most persistent, hardest working business owners there are.

Focusing on a job can cause you to miss opportunities in the job market and for your business. Trust that everything will work out, and it will.

As for being a better businessperson than programmer.... Bill Gates made zillions of dollars using business partnerships to push sub-par software on the world for decades, so I'm sure it's ok :P
