Anything is possible, but don't take it lightly. The #1 thing you'll need is distribution. In other words, anyone can create a brand and produce clothing. That's easier than ever today. However, you need distribution partners to generate sales. Those channels are very much relationship driven and take time. I would suggest creating your own channel online first, and test the market to first find out who your primary demographic/customer is. I'm not trying to discourage you by any means, but you must look long term on this type of business model or you will quickly get discouraged. FUBU is the posterchild for urban clothing success, but the market is much different now and retail is much more challenged than when Daymon started FUBU. Go into it with a long term view and your chances of success will be much greater. I hope that didn't come off discouraging, that is not my goal. Above all else, get distribution. For faster credibility, target your local icons in hip-hop and/or extreme sports and get them to wear your stuff in exchange for free gear. They hold the influence and you can build grass roots awareness from there. Good luck.

    distributors do not create sales.

YOU have to create sales FIRST.

THEN a distributor will be interested in you.

WOW talk about putting the cart before the horse.

The OP has a name and domain but OH how do I do the business.

And now whiteboard is telling people the #1 thing you need is distribution.

UGgggggggggggg no wonder so many businesses fail.

Honestly WHERE do you guys get this info you spew to others?

PatrickP, I'm not talking about distributors, I'm talking about distribution (marketing channels.) Forgive me as I probably didn't make that clear. You are right in that everything begins with sales. But, once you have identified who your customers are you must identify how you will create sales with them (which are your distribution or marketing channels.) So, in the case of urban clothing, it will be vital to understand how you will reach your customer in order to make those sales, and those channels are vital. You asked where I get my advice. I've started a number of businesses and that is what I'm drawing from. All have required distribution channels. But to be fair, I've never done retail. So, here are (3) examples from three people I know that have.

    1. Person A: He started a clothing brand catered to underground music lovers. In order to make sales, they go to where their customers are which are nightclubs. They give away low-cost t shirts to the dj's (influencers in their market), and they set up a booth in the back for sales. Their distribution channel is the nightclub as they don't want a retail store.

    2. Person B: I just saw him tonight. He sells custom t-shirts to college kids. His main distribution channel is online. But, he realized his distribution channel started in the dorms, where word of mouth spreads. He gave free shirts to the RA leaders in the dorms and put their url website on the back. Students found their website (their main distribution channel) and his site makes hundreds of thousands of dollars right via his website.

    3. Person C: Old high school friend. He developed a high end clothing line so his distribution channel is a retail store in an expensive part of town. He makes sales through that store only.

If you thought I meant create clothing and then go find a catalog distributor and list it there to make it work, that was definitely not my advice. That would be a recipe for failure.

    Thanks.
