It's always wise to find out whether or not the services offered is legit, and not a scam. However, I will have to disagree with your 'free trial or run' advice.
As a web designer, I know that designing themes take time (generally: layout plan, layout design + graphics creation, coding, browser compatibility testing, revisions)...I always feel insulted when someone asks me for a free trial/free website.
Let us not forget that there are many people online who ask for trials in bad faith (i.e. they want a freebie for whatever reason). So it is never a good idea for web designers to actually agree to "free trials". Legit web designers should have a portfolio, and should have no problem sharing a few of their works with potential clients.
For costly designs, it's always a good idea to use an escrow service which normally protects both the buyer and the seller.
