    Portable

Recently, a friend of mine was given an assignment for one of his classes where his goal was to take a household item and change it from both a visual and functional standpoint. From his brilliant mind stemmed the most practical portable coffee mug I have ever seen. Without giving too much detail, I would just like to say that it looks good, and saves time, money, and energy. Here's my question: without having a patent, a trademark or a tangible model, where do I go for funding? Since an idea doesn't constitute as property, I am nervous about presenting the Idea to Anyone

Damned if you do, damned if you don't... FYI - I am NOT a patent attorney but I can tell you as OPINION, you can get a provisional patent inexpensively. Google the term. This will protect it at "some level" for a short period of time during which time you can feel a little better about sharing it. Also consider that most of the time patents are better off sold to someone already in that line of product. They'll often buy the rights off you and use their power and retail influence to get it moving. I know this from working with many inventors as a consultant. Also, be sure to use a non-disclosure form before sharing it with anyone, even the family dog. It's just another line of defense. Also, recognize in the cut throat world of products a company can still take your idea and leave you holding the bag on defending your rights. You'd have to prove that the guy with deep pockets stole it from you and that is expensive. So, consider narrowing down your presentation to a few companies already making something in that genre (mugs) and see what they'd offer you. THEN, when you walk with that cash and invent the next thing you'll be in a better spot financially to protect yourself.

Lastly, you just have to have some faith that not everyone is a scammer. More people go to the grave with million dollar ideas choked by fear than ever go to market with them.

Ok, so I hope that helps. Don't forget to sign up for the first YE Webinar - I'd love to have you on. LINK HERE

    Dan,

I apologize for the late response (I'm in the middle of finals). I appreciate your inspiring word of wisdom. You're definitely right, there are good people out there. I need to get over my fear, thanks for the information about the provisional patent... I'll see if my friend will give me the rights to his idea. I'll be in touch if you would like to know where I get with this project.
