    First rejection of Patent

I've been working with a patent attorney since early 2009 for my product. I have just recently received my first rejection from the USPTO. I know this is to be expected. However, the cost to reply with an argument from my attorney is way more than I want to spend. Personally, I really don't like my attorney for several reasons. (It has nothing to do with the first rejection, like I said, I knew to expect this.)
    So my questions are:
Is it possible to switch attorneys now or try and reply to USPTO on my own instead of having him do it?
Any suggestions on an inexpensive or less expensive and less stressful way of continuing with the patent?

You can apply on your own but I would not recommend it. You have to look at it this way, you're attorney failed his first go around, what are the chances you will succeed without the training and knowledge he has? It most likely take you much much longer to make the proper corrections and more likely to get rejected again if you do not use an attorney.

I would recommend going to a new attorney and having them pick up where he left off. Hopefully the cause for rejection was clear.
When I stand before God at the end of my life, I would hope that I would not have a single bit of talent left, and could say, "I used everything you gave me."

Why not just turn it open source, available for all?

    I don't believe in patents.

I applied by myself, and was successful,
for a patent in the UK. Just read the literature from USPTO. my application included a description, claims and an abstract along with my design drawings which were not to scale. The UK intellectual property office were very helpful whenever I called them for advice which was free.

Any way you could find another attorney? What's the track record like with your current one?
