Hello. We have an idea of a new electronic gadget/device that would revolutionize a certain activity. I suppose like every other person with an idea, the question is where to start. If we seriously believe in the validity of this device, is a patent the safest/best thing to do first? And if so, my understanding is that a prototype is needed to obtain a patent. True? If so... do I honestly have to come up with a working prototype of this electronic device to apply-for/obtain a patent? How can I work with a model shop/engineering firm to help produce a prototype without divulging the basis of the device?
Short of going the patent route - is there any other way to make money off of this idea (obviously that's our goal here)... ie selling the idea? Or does it even make sense to try to "sell an idea" that you don't "own" (have a patent on)?
This device is not a new scientific finding, (like the Segway was). This is simply a convergence of existing, common technologies that would make a certain function, (which millions of people do every day), easier, faster, funner and would make others want one as well when observed. Based on existing 'like' technology, the device should very easily be able to sell for under US$200 (likely less).
Any advice is greatly appreciated.
