average cost of a patent search and filing?

I have had ideas before, but often have no idea how original they are. Isn't that what a patent search is for? How much does this whole, search and patent thing cost? and can't you patent a design, or just an improvement and get some credit and money?

Patent search is around $500. Then there are different levels of patents. Cheap ones can be $10K where expensive ones can be $30K+. The $10K patents are for things such as simple machines and the expensive ones are for high tech stuff.
