I would try to be very careful if it is involving financial investment. I would do some research first about the business offer and about the person who offers it.

If that person got a back up from a big and trusted with proven track record company, I would take the offer.

    Sure I would...

you sell to customers you don't know, buy services from people we don't know, import, export , trading product or services for dollars doesn't require "trust" so, don't use the same criteria for an unfamiliar business partner you'd normally use for a personal relationship...

business relationships can be built on this "unfamiliar" platform... simply because it's all under the umbrella of "business".

Of course you have to have some amount of "confidance" (not trust) in the people you deal with... trust in business is asking too much especially with a aprtner... take that out of your equation... sketch out an agreement with someone you feel is capable and accountable, seal up all the leaks and you don't have to worry about trust...

your doing business not getting married or trying to hire a best pal...

I'd stay clear of family partnerships... this injects too mcuh emotion and other requirements that can be a real strain on a business relationship. keep it seperate if you want to keep it simple and lasting...

    business is business.. that's it.

I would definitely suggest it. You might now always have all the resources in your personal circle. I got into business on deals where I don't personally know the other person. But make sure you do background checks, check professional references and if need look into his financial life with his permission.

Also, I take them for a game of golf. It shows how a person plays a game in real life. If they move there ball, how the react to sand traps and ponds. Golf is a game of character and will show you a lot about another person. The one requirement is that you never talk business while playing golf. At the end of the game, you should always have a good idea of what type of person they are and you should know if you want to go into business together. I think i got this idea from Donald Trump, but I'm not quiet sure.
“All men dream, but not equally. Those men who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds wake in the morning to find it was but vanity, but those men who dream by day-these are the dangerous men, for they dream with open eyes to make their dreams come true.”

If the profile and their portfolio is good enough then I'll join them.
But I would prefer to deal with few friends, classmates or family members (or within their network)

No, I have never had business with unknown person. It is better to have business with someone you trust and rely on instead of have with stranger.

do you think that limit's your reach and is just a bit of closed minded thinking for business and dealing with the "world"?

at some point, you need to cut yourself from the apron strings of familiarity, eh??

Unless you are surrounded by an unlimited supply of smart 'friends' you are eventually going to have to do business with strangers. You just need to take baby steps. You don't want to spend a $100,000 starting a business with a stranger... but you may be willing to invest $5,000 to give them a try.

I would get to know a bit about them and their history first. Then I'd see if they had any partners I could talk to and get some personal views from them.

Actually, I have done this before without really checking into the person. I found them myself when they ran a small blog. I was a reader for a while and then approached them with my offer, it worked out well and we are pretty good friends now. In fact, I am having another similar meeting tomorrow with a new person. Fingers crossed my instinct was right!
