    work experience.

    hey everyone,
iv decided for a bit of my long summer holiday this year (14 weeks i think!) as i will have just finished my gcses and be going onto college, i would like to do some work experience.

last year i went to a marketing company in london called base one, but this year i would like to take it more seriously.

i was thinking about contacting some of the big entrepreneurs in the uk, and asking if i can take some work experience there, do you think this would work?

i was going to write a letter along with my cv and post it to them.

a few names i am going to try are:

    Peter Jones
    Theo Paphitis
    Sir Richard Branson
    Sir Alan Sugar
    Richard Farleigh

anyone got any other ideas of people i could contact which are based in the uk?

    thanks

Well Richard Branson is my idle... if you work for him, will you get an autograph for me.

But more realistically, you are probably going to have zero luck contacting these people directly, you really should contact the HR departments at companies they own. Although writing a letter to them personally can't hurt.

Not a person so much as a field...

You already have the experience working on the marketing side, though big marketing firms can give you a bad idea of how much advertising and marketing your business should cost...

I'd recommend finding a place like we have here in the US called "Accountemps", their a temp agency that will train you in different skills like book keeping, payroll, etc. and hook you up with local companies.

This would get you a good base in the 2 key skills that an entreprenuer needs, marketing/sales and accounting/cost management. Helping a small business type keep track of expenses is a good way to learn how to do the same for you business early on.

It's not a sexy as following an excentric billionare around all day and getting his coffee, but you have a much better shot at making it happen and gaining information that will be of value to you.

They apparently operate under the Robert Half brand name in the United Kingdom. It's a temp agency, but they'll train you if you convience them that you're worth their time.

Basically working at a place like this can get you a lot of exposure to different areas and skillsets of business in a lot of different settings very quickly, if you approach it like that. Plus Temps make more than people would normally in any respective position, compensating for lack of job security or something like that.

and il still be 16 at the time, do you know if they would accept me at such a young age?

bt yeah the temp agency sounds a gd idea if it concentrates on skills alot more.

im still going to contact other big entrepreneurs aswell as the temp agency i think though.

I honestly don't know how much it will effect your employability... I just know that they've offered projects and positions to an 18 year old here in the states. So it's not without precident. You'll probably have to impress them a little more than most though.

Like I said, it's a resource that's out there... Most "mentors" that I've had have recommended getting jobs that give you something besides just money, a skill, connections, or whatever. I wish I would have known about this starting out since I worked in a lot of bad situations and with this I could have just told them to send me somewhere else instead of painfully hanging on until I'd been at the place for 6 months.

Definately send you letters and try to get in with the big wheels, it can never hurt as all they could do is say no or ignore you. Just have a backup plan of action.

well il defo give it a go, no harm in trying.

my plan was to contact say 10 different "big" people or companies, and if one says yes, take them up on it, my back up plan was to then find some other companies, where i can get work experience, say in a different field, iv done marketing, so as you said, in finance and book keeping, maybe a bank.

does anyone have any company suggestions, where they think i could get some good experience, not just bringing cups of tea to teh workers..? whether its to do with banking, or any other aspect of business, i would be happy to consider, anywhere in the uk, preferably south tho.

    cheers

    Hmmmmm,
I myself had this idea and carried it out. I'm 18 and probably have more experience than you do. None of them got back to me, I don't know if its worth it because I personally think they must get hundreds of these requests a day.

    Good luck .
